Could two become one for Ireland's vintners associations?

The two organisations are holding talks and if all goes well – members would be asked to vote.

THE TWO ASSOCIATIONS that represent publicans are holding talks that may lead them to join forces.

The Licensed Vintners Association (LVA) represents publicans located in the Greater Dublin area while the Vintners’ Federation of Ireland (VFI) represents publicans located outside Dublin.

It comes after strategic reviews of both organisations over recent months.

Both reviews found that while the organisations were in good financial health and had support amongst their members- there were strong arguments in favour of creating a new unified, national representative organisation.

Next step

The Councils of the two bodies have directed that representatives from both organisations should now meet to explore this possibility in greater detail and to assess its feasibility.

If the two Councils believe that the concept has merit – then it will be put to separate votes of the membership of the two organisations.

It’s expected that these votes would not take place before this time next year.

In a joint statement, Donall O’Keeffe and Padraig Cribben, Chief Executives of the LVA and the VFI respectively, said the two organisations would consider this matter in detail over the coming months;

We have decided that the creation of a new single organisation deserves careful and detailed examination … the LVA and VFI have a great deal in common and have worked closely on various issues over recent years.

“We must now decide whether or not a new organisation would assist us to better represent the interests of our members across the country and enhance the position of the licensed trade which plays such an important role in our local and national economies.”

The LVA and the VFI are both out of date and completely useless bodies.

Pubs are a dying breed because the customer is/was rarely considered in any outlet owned by their mafia styled organisations.

    Profit before everything!!

Any decent manager, Barman or waitress was pushed out in the tiger years because foreign bodies would do to pump out product…..service and investment in training was buried, along with investment in outlets.

The customer trained themselves in the finer things in life and the pub (in most cases) couldn’t even keep the toilet floor dry, never mind keep up with trends! Although their prices continued to grow by the day.

VFI, LVA are both defunct! The common pub as a result is dead in the water!

Shame on the Fitzgeralds, Chawkes and other misers who killed the golden goose and a whole sector of trade while they were at it.

No sympathy or interest here! Bring on the lidls of pubs anytime now!

Although you still would struggle to get a seat in most Dublin city centre pubs of a weekend night.

Ahh, do you remember the days when this crowd taught they ran the country. They did whatever they liked.
    Kinda like the present government.

They still do. The raid by Michael Noonan on the pension funds to pay for drop the vat on pub grub shows how powerful they still are. Legalised stealing.

Since half the pubs in the country are now closed due to becoming unsustainable perhaps it makes for having just one vintners association. Then they might be more supportive of those remaining in business.

The best way to enhance and promote the licensed trade is to reduce the price of alcohol.

No one would pay €2.20 for a can of beer if a pint in the pub was €4

€2.50 for a pint in Wetherspoons Blackrock. They’re looking for a premises in Temple Bar. The sooner the better.
