RUPERT MURDOCH HAS spoken out on the phone hacking scandal dogging his media empire, telling a US newspaper: We’ve handled it extremely well in every way.
In an interview with the Wall Street Journal – which he owns – Murdoch defended New Corporation’s response to the stream of revelations which have already forced the closure of one of his flagship brands, the News of the World newspaper. There have been persistent rumours he could be on the brink of selling off his other UK newspapers entirely, which he denied yesterday.
Mr Murdoch said the firm had dealt with the situation “extremely well in every way possible”, admitting only “minor mistakes”. He insisted that News Corporation still has “a reputation of great good works in this country.” However he admitted he was “just getting annoyed” by the continuous negative headlines, adding: “I’ll get over it. I’m tired.”
Meanwhile, it’s been confirmed that the FBI is to investigate allegations that News Corp reporters attempted to hack the phones of 9/11 victims. US Attorney General Eric Holder told reporters in Australia this morning that the probe was “progressing”, Reuters reports. “There have been members of Congress in the United States who have asked us to investigate those same allegations and we are progressing in that regard using the appropriate federal law enforcement agencies,” he said.
The allegations over the phones of 9/11 victims first surfaced in the Daily Mirror, which reported that a US private investigator and former New York cop was asked to access phone records of those who died in the attacks. He was said to have turned the job down.
