Defence Forces investigating after 'barbed wire tied around soldier's feet'

Military police are investigating the incident.

Updated 13.30

THE DEFENCE FORCES has confirmed that military police are investigating an incident that reportedly saw a soldier given electric shocks.

A spokesperson for the forces said that a current member had made a complaint around an alleged assault at The Curragh camp.

“The Defence Forces confirms that the Military Police are investigating an alleged assault following a complaint made by a serving member.”

Today’s Examiner quotes the soldier who made the complaint, describing how barbed wire was tied around his feet in what he called “a bad prank gone wrong”.

They took off my shoes and socks and put barbed wire around my two big toes. They then hooked that up to a field telephone which [when wound up] gave me the electric shocks. They shocked me three or four times. One individual then took the barbed wire off my two toes and put it to my chest and I got shocked again. They all thought it was a bit of a laugh.

The incident was recorded on a phone, it is reported.

The alleged victim has since returned to work.

Defence Minister Simon Coveney said that is “very unhappy” about the allegations.

“I’m very unhappy about it and we have a full investigation under way, a military police investigation.”

He said it will be a “full and thorough investigation” and will result in “pretty severe consequences”, but he doesn’t want to say more until it has concluded.

Additional reporting by Orla Ryan.

If true, this is shameful. If this happened in guantanemo bay there would be international uproar. Prank or no prank, disgraceful.

Ye, there would be uproar if it happened to one of the prisoners because the liberals are always looking for excuses to shut it down and give terrorists a free pass

    Yup!

I’d assert that Liberals want to see Gitmo regulated as any prison is and suspected terrorists given a fair and open trial to determine their guilt or innocence and punished accordingly.

Not being subjected to rendition and then interred for a (potentially) unlimited amount of time, subject to treatment contrary to the Geneva Convention.

Treat them like terrorists, but we have rules on how you treat terrorists.

Fair enough, we still have standards of how prisoners of any description can and should be handled.

Gitmo as far as the US is concerned is not a “part of America” therefore the US Constitution does not apply… Try and tell that to any Cuban that tries to get in and is met with an armed Marine kindly telling them to GTFO of GITMO.

They abduct foreign nationals, hold them for as long as they want and torture them… And they are the good guys?

Operations at Guantanamo have been condemned by every major human rights group on the planet, many of which the US is a member.

As I said, I don’t want it shut down, I want the SUSPECTED terrorists there (as most haven’t been convicted) to receive fair and adequate access to legal aid and to receive ethical treatment, while a guest of the United States. And those convicted to be afforded the same protection as any convicted criminal.

    Fair?

Human rights groups? Like Amnesty and Oxfam? That is funny. You know as well as I do that they are weak, feckless finger waggers. The world isn’t fair, Sean, least of all when it concerns war. All I know is that we need to be stronger than our enemies, not weaker

Like Amnesty, Unicef and The UN to start. Pick ANY other one and we can check their position on it if you’d like…

A number of them, yes I’ll grant you don’t have much clout but that doesn’t mean that they are wrong, does it? Or does might make right? The one with the most guns, decides what’s ethical?

You’re right the world isn’t fair, that doesn’t mean that the “good guys” can and should have carte blanche to do whatever the hell they want, that makes them the bad guys and that only adds to the world being unfair.

The problem with being “stronger than our enemies” is that without due process of a trial, you have no idea who the enemies are. So how bout we just round up a whole load of people far away, stick em in the worst conditions we can and then hope that some of em confess.

(Many of) Those held their have been convicted of no crime, they receive almost no access to legal counsel, their treatment is inhuman.

Are you saying that you believe all the guy’s in gitmo are like “real” terrorists that actually carried out activities for some looney in a cave? Will you cop on man. ALL “terrorist” groups are nothing more than government/corporate mercenaries trained and funded by the very people that say they hate us for our freedom’s. Who wants war? Corporations and politicians want war and it’s them that create your terrorist.

Hold on a second here! To be considered bullying it needs to ongoing behaviour, otherwise its dignity in the workplace. If this is an isolated incidence then it is categorically NOT bullying!

Please look up the LRC definition of bullying and get back to me. This definition is used as a reference in legal cases. Just because your primary school teacher told you that being mean to people meant you were a bully doesn’t mean its true. It’s a more complicated than that.
