'Get your ass to Mars': Buzz Aldrin wants humans to permanently occupy Mars

The second man to land on the Moon said those that travel to Mars shouldn’t envisage that they will ever return to Earth.

THE SECOND MAN to walk on the Moon, Buzz Aldrin, said he wants humans to permanently occupy the planet Mars.

Speaking to the BBC, while wearing a “Get Your Ass to Mars” t-shirt, he said funding for space exploration by the US needs to be at least doubled if humans are going to land on Mars by 2035.

NASA recently said they could put someone in the vicinity of Mars by that year.

We haven’t been funding space as much as it needs to, it’s only half a percent of our Budget. We need more money, maybe double that, then ramp it up by 2035, 2040, as we would need to land people and prepare them for their permanency on Mars.

I think by that time we should have assembled, from Earth, a number of modules that have been landed at every two year opportunity, and then with astronauts at the moon of Mars, they can do the final assembly, and if they are successful, they could land.

When asked did he think the astronauts who travel to Mars should stay there permanently, with no plan for their return, he said:

“Yes, that’s right”, adding that lift-off from the surface of Mars to bring them back to Earth after being on Mars for just over a year would be more expensive.

“The cost per person if we bring them back is a lot higher,” said Aldrin, who said the purpose should be to build a permanent colony on Mars.

Technically, when the spacecraft ‘Eagle’ landed, – they were BOTH the first men on the Moon, since they were both inside when the lander’s feet touched the surface.
The suits they wore were also self-contained ‘spacecraft’ and neither of them stood barefoot on the Moon.
Armstrong made the first Bootprint, because his seat was nearest the hatch, that’s the only difference.
The skill, & bravery of all these guys is awe-inspiring, never mind dedication & intelligence.

IMO were not ready for deep space exploration and more manned missions until we have developed a bit more as a species, at least to where we have a unified federal earth govt to do things like space exploration (not every day government, calm down conspiracy theorists) as one species rather than 10 different countries engaging in a political p1ssing contest, that’s not how we should make this journey, we should do it as a unified humanity, with the developing world developed, not squabbling nation states trying to out-do each other.
I’d hate for some starving kid in a third world country to see the west spending a trillion dollars on a mission to mars as he sits there picking corn on the cob bits out of cow dung to eat.

Not to say we can’t do robotic exploration etc that can have huge benefits here on earth, but manned missions are more symbolic and the kind of milestone we need to hit as one world.
I’d rather see this flag on the surface of mars:
    http://tinyurl.com/kfvrh66
    …than the US/Chinese/EU flag.

Completely disagree – competition breeds innovation, collusion breeds stagnation. Would the US have gotten a man on the moon even by now if not for the Soviets getting Gagarin up in space before them – they ultimately beat their own estimates of when they would make the moon by 9 years largely because they had to beat the Russians to it. If we all start working together on things like this we end up with one massive civil service like inefficient machine – it’s when we’re all trying to get one up on each other that things actually get done.
