Thousands expected for anti-austerity march

The Enough Campaign is organising the protest against the EU/IMF programme in Dublin today.

THOUSANDS ARE EXPECTED to march in Dublin this afternoon in protest against the EU/IMF bailout and austerity programme in Ireland.

The Enough Campaign has the support of  trade unions, TDs, political organisations such as the Socialist Workers Party, and groups seeking to maintain public sector services that have been affected by austerity measures .

One of the TDs involved in the march, People Before Profit’s Richard Boyd-Barrett told the Irish Times:

We are absolutely determined to mobilise mass opposition to this economic madness over the coming weeks and bring the spirit of Greek, Spanish and for that matter Egyptian style resistance to this country.

Protesters will meet at the Garden of Remembrance in Parnell Square in Dublin at 2pm to march for what it says are jobs, fairness and democracy, a bailing out of people and not bankers, and a scrapping of the EU/IMF deal.

If you are attending the march today submit your pictures for inclusion in a slideshow we will run later today. Email them to tips@thejournal.ie, tweet them @thejournal_ie or if you’re using our iPhone, iPad or Android apps, select the camera icon in the top left of the screen and follow the instructions.

I’d say if the funding was for tennis, polo, hockey, cricket , croquet or bowls etc then little Jeffery would be lauding it as great for Northern Ireland.

@John Doe: This is the guy who explicitly congratulated Tyrone and Armagh for getting to the All Ireland final , referring by to them as two British teams. Sadly , he didn’t tweet back “ah only pulling your leg“ . The list of sports you listed was a good one , all suitable for the barristers like him. I agree with what you said about him ! But , if NI don’t have the money for it , or least some , you can kinda see why they’d be annoyed about funding the GAA . What I mean there is , even in the south , the soccer and rugby heads and the other niche sports Leila the lyrics and tennis etc get annoyed that the GAA gets so much funding , you know the types who call the GAA the Grab All Association . Donny is an odd fish. Ex UUP but opposed GFA and joined DUP but isn’t a headbanger .

Besides that, we wouldn’t have needed the protocol if the UK didn’t leave the EU, the protocol benefits NI the most out of everyone involved as they have access to a massive market and can still trade more freely than anyone in that market with GB. If another stadium was to be used it would be Croker due to the size . Croker sadly was rubbish for soccer games . Cork ? Transport infrastructure etc (even with the airport ) is not good enough. Unless Turner’s cross got a magically quick upgrade , Putting all the games at the Aviva would be manageable . The next likely suitable stadium for soccer would probably be Thomand Park in Limerick , even then they would have to install all seating and ideally all sides be roofed . . The only thing he cares about is that it is a GAA stadium and it will host NI football games (possibly as they may not even be in it) on the one occasion that major football tournament will ever hit NI. He is not bothered about the £500bn that literally went up in smoke in the cash for ash scandal largely because it benefitted DUP cronies when they thought and were happy for London to foot the bill until they went into panic mode when they found out that they wouldn’t be coughing up. He would also have. He would also have no objection to a proposed tunnel or bridge that bojo was looking into (just for the optics) that was costed somewhere between €300-400bn that would have went from nowhere to nothing. Jeffrey would have had no problems with any of this as he and his party are major bigots living in the past. If he is that concerned with the cost of living etc. he would form an executive in stormont but it is all games with the DUP which always seem to play and usually to their own detriment.

It is hard to disagree though, they cant fund health but can fund a stadium,
You cant deny the long term benefits a torunament like this can bring however.
didnt yesterday budget announce 1.1 Billion for development projects in the North? Just use some of that instead and add it to what the GAA are willing to contribute.
The GAA make alot of money each year and it is a GAA pith afterall.

@Hurrly 90: On the contrary, it’s easy to disagree. If this extra funding was to have Euro28 matches in Windsor Park or rugby world cup matches in Ravenhill, Jeffley would be singing a different tune. And if he and his party are so worried about the health service in the north, then why are they still refusing to go back into the executive?

@John Terry: why in god’s name (and Allah) an Irish Nationalist would support Northern Ireland National Football team ? They are not real Irish nationalists if they did that . Only one team in Ireland and that’s the one in Dublin . It shouldn’t matter how friendly the Windsor Park mob make it for so called Irish nationalists , Irish Nationalists shouldn’t support them .

SF, Alliance & SDLP now represent about 55% of NI people. It’s only a matter of time, however, if we want it, NI will cost us €10bn per year to run as NI currently has an ongoing budget deficit each year of 10bn. Sunak would love to offload NI.
