THE SHANNON-BASED Rescue 115 Coast Guard helicopter was called to the scene this morning after a 54-year-old man carrying out surveying work fell at a cliff in Co Kerry.
The man was part of three person team conducting work on behalf of Ordnance Survey Ireland – the national mapping agency.
The man who fell managed to climb back up, but was unable to make it up to the top of the cliff.
A decision was made to winch him to safety — and the Coast Guard chopper then airlifted him to hospital in Tralee.
“The man was working at water level when the incident occurred, and did not fall off a cliff,” a statement released on behalf of Ordnance Survey Ireland said.
“The three members of the survey team were wearing their full complement of protective equipment, including helmets, life-jackets, and harnesses, and also were anchored to the rocks with climbing ropes.
“As a precaution, the lead surveyor called on the assistance of the emergency services which airlifted the surveyor to Kerry General Hospital.
“He suffered no apparent injuries but was being detained for observation.”
The alarm was raised this morning at around 11.38am, according to Valentia Coastguard.
Fenit lifeboat, and rescue boats from Ballybunion and Glenderry also attended the scene.
The other two men were found suffering from slight hypothermia, but were otherwise unharmed.
