AN INVESTIGATION IS under way after 45,000 litres of toxic sludge was found at a lay-by on the M1 in Louth this afternoon.
45 IBC storage tanks were found off the northbound lane, near Junction 20 for Jonesborough.
Council staff are currently at the scene .
The toxic sludge will be brought to the council yard in Dundalk this evening.
The ‘sludge’ material is believed to be the by-product of illegal diesel laundering.

At least this time it was left at a lay-by and not dumped in some stream or river. They may be involved in illegal activities but they may also respect the environment.
After 16 years of being given permission to do this (though only secretly as part of the GFA) i’d say these guys are getting old and tired of the business. They want to be bought out and “compensated” for loss of earnings. Thats why they are leaving the mess in public places, as in to put pressure on the politicians who set up the “no effective policing of dieasel laundering along the border” policy 16 years ago. They know they won’t be prosecuted.
Better on the road than screwing with nature and water tables. Council have to clean it now. Rather this than in a ditch or field. Partial credit durtbags.

I think we need a new quango to solve this problem. Irish diesel. We could put some retired politicians on its board and close friends of serving politicians. They could hire some expert consultants and pay them exorbitant amounts of money to come up with a solution like introducing a 3rd colour diesel. That would in theory do away with the problem of having 2 different coloured and priced diesel. Sorted!!
