THIS EVENING’S HASTILY-convened summit on homelessness at Dublin’s Custom House has ended — with ministers committing to an extra supply of emergency accommodation beds for the capital, and a promising to bring further proposals to Cabinet next week.
“Our ambition is that there will be no need for anyone to have to sleep rough in Dublin this Christmas unless they make that choice themselves, for whatever reason,” Environment Minister Alan Kelly said in a statement.
Junior minister Paudie Coffey said they had identified immediate, short term responses “and we intend to get working on them”.
Kelly convened the forum in response to the death of Jonathan Corrie overnight on Sunday, in a doorway just metres from the gates of Leinster House.
Opposition spokespeople, Dublin council mayors, representatives of various Government Departments and agencies, and heads of NGOs all attended.
The first session got under way at 3pm, with participants arriving for meetings over staggered 45 minute periods.
These are the “targeted measures” decided upon at the meeting, according to the Department of the Environment this evening.
164 additional emergency beds had already been confirmed for the capital, in advance of the renewed focus on the issue of homelessness this week.
38 of those are already in place, and a further 106 were due to come on stream by the end of next week, with the remainder available by January.
The 220 figure includes the 164 beds already announced, a spokesperson for the Department confirmed this evening.
The latest official count of rough sleepers in Dublin, carried out last month, found 168 people bedding down for the night in doorways, alleys and in parks.
Speaking on his way out of the meeting, Archbishop of Dublin Diarmuid Martin said it had been ”very useful”.
Earlier today, Dublin Lord Mayor Christy Burke — a long-time campaigner on the issue — said he would be “fully totally annoyed” if nothing concrete arose from the meeting.
“The day of talking is over it’s a day of action, and lets hope action takes place,” Burke said.
Later, he said he had never been at such a positive meeting.
“That tonight is a breath of fresh air,” he told reporters.
“I’m going out in the street at 12 o’clock tonight and to be able to deliver that news to the men and women that I’ll meet on the ground… It’ll be Christmas.. Santy coming early.”
Speaking earlier this week, Taoiseach Enda Kenny said it would be “very difficult” to get all rough sleepers off the streets, given the complexity of some peoples’ cases.

BTW the entire purpose of a foreign minister is to tell people what the opinion of the Irish people is on various topics. I think that the world in general understands that he does not speak with 100% coverage of all individual opinions on the island.

And so Ireland should, Russia has this weird notion that they’re a super power, you can’t come into someone’s country and poison someone along with hurting police officers etc in the process, they’re dead right to do what they’re doing and if Russia expelles some of their ambassadors etc then so be it..

If the British were so concerned about attacks on innocent people, they should stop supplying arms to Yemen and Saudi Arabia. Britain should just hit Putin’s cronies with property in the UK with Unexplained Wealth Orders (UWOs). If they can’t come up with a plausible explanation then the property should be seized and their Visas should be cancelled.
Speaks for itself that Ireland supports the UK investigation, with the govt smart enough not to lay direct blame on the Kremlin at this point.
What’s more interesting is the words ‘no backsliding’ w.r.t. the December deal about the Irish border. That’s London’s own post-referendum Brexit slogan being used against itself. Keep the pressure on, Simon.

Well there’s neutrality for ya! Why hasn’t the UK given the evidence to the Russians as requested? It’s very similar to the US blaming Bin Laden (may Allah forgive him) for 9/11 and insisting the Taliban hand him over. They requested evidence and said they would even send him to trial, they just needed the evidence. It NEVER came, instead they were met with war and destruction for their insistence on a fair and just trial.
So Russia had this guy in prison for 10 years for been a spy, then they released him, and poisoned him with a nerve agent invented by Russia, drawing condemnation from all world leaders. No hard evidence that it’s Russia, just a gut feeling, a war with Russia would be the war that finishes civilization, Putin said, if there’s no Russia, there’s no world.

@Mick Jordan: what of the Dublin / Monaghan bombings. The British government still refuse to release the files. The Irish government still refuse to take them to task. Yet the Irish government jump on to support an alleged attack by Russia on a British spy on the word of a British prime minister.
