'The Taoiseach is deluded and no one takes him seriously': The week in quotes

“The turtle will receive her own boarding pass.”

IT WAS A week when homelessness was trust into the spotlight once more, murmurs of a general election continued, and a turtle flew to Gran Canaria.

All that. and more, it’s the week in quotes:

I just hope that for the rest of the people that are homeless on the street, that have addictions, that they will be given some attention, to be given help, to get accommodation and more help in hostels, whatever help they can give to them.

Imagine if he didn’t actually do it though? And even if he did, there’s something dodgy about us cheering on a long drawn out execution in the US when we wouldn’t stand for the same thing here. Death penalty should either be applied everywhere or nowhere, I’d go with nowhere

I agree Stephen, executing him won’t bring that poor girl back! Also, if he is executed his case is less likely to be reopened in the case of new evidence that could prove him innocent!

Be careful what you wish for – there have been so many miscarriages of justice – and surely it is also murder when you kill somebody whether the state is doing it or not – complete hypocrisy. If the UK had had the death penalty, the Birmingham Six would likely now be dead.

Besides the unsavoury nature of state-sponsored murder that the pro-death penalty mob bays for, it is proven beyond doubt that the death penalty is not a deterrent. The US justice system is the most repressive and cruel on the planet – despite having by far the highest percentage of their citizens locked up of any country on the planet, their re-offending rates are still massive (c. 75%) – ours are lower at around 55%, but the nordic countries with more lenient rehabilitative approaches tend to have a re-offending rate around 25%.

We can’t force somebody to do it and we can’t reward convicted rapists with a consequence free chance to rape someone so it would have to be a volunteer who would get no sexual gratification from it but would be willing to take one for the team. Are there any other circumstances where you think rape is ok?

You are right Shane. All of the countries with the top death penalty rates (the US is up there) are repressive brutal states – the two generally go together. We are all aware of the miscarriages of justice that have been discovered after the person was executed. In addition, if it’s murder, then it’s murder when the state does it too. We’ve always had the mob baying for blood, but thankfully we live in a country that does not respond to the mob. We know the death penalty is absolutely proven not to be a deterrent, and it is murder. It achieves nothing and is the mark of an uncivilised society.
