Justice Catherine McGuinness Laura Hutton/Photocall Ireland

Justice Catherine McGuinness was approached to run for president...but she wasn't interested

The former Supreme Court judge said she doesn’t regret her decision to turn it down.

JUSTICE CATHERINE MCGUINNESS has said she was once asked to run for the Áras an Uachtaráin, but she said she wasn’t interested.

Speaking to Miriam O’Callaghan on her radio programme on RTÉ, McGuinness, a former Supreme Court judge, said she was approached to run for the presidency.

McGuinness confirmed that she had been approached in the past, but said that she really didn’t want to run at the time.

Right person for the job

“… Other people at the time said don’t do that, you are important where you are. I didn’t feel that it was or I was the right person for that.”

She said she felt she had a lot to do as it was and stated that she never regretted her decision of turning it down.

McGuinness has been a widow since the death of her husband Proinsias Mac Aonghusa in September 2003. She said he fully supported her decision at the time.

Speaking about the job of being president, she said she didn’t think it was suited to her:

… it is a job where you really have to settle down to the fact you have to be really nice and polite to everybody… you’re not being able to say what you think…

However, she said that President Michael D Higgins tries his level best “to say what he thinks and succeeds very well at it”.

I sent Revenues letter back to them with money inside and a nice hand written letter that went “Obviously our valuations slightly differ, but for now please accept this kind gesture of €5 against the cost of your next lunch as you will be waiting a f***ing while”

I would imagine that if tomorrow Enda said he was going to instruct revenue to take 25% of depositer’s money from their accounts the reaction of the Irish would be, well, obviously to stare blankly in to space in a kind of homer Simpson fashion!!

It is great how the grounds of mansions are not included is the valuation. So Reilly does not have to pay for the 150 acres manicured gardens and lake. Nice one Dr James “The Stroke” Reilly with your 13 bedroom Mansion . OK for some.

They did not value your house. they gave you an average rang of values for different types of property in your area.
Your comment indicates that you have a good idea of what your property is worth, so use that figure. Again, as you have arrived at that number logically and honestly the Revenue will accept your assessment without question.

The single biggest crisis facing Ireland is the vastly under estimated and under reported mortgage arrears crisis. The mortgage arrears crisis has the real potential to collapse the Irish banks.

But just in case the mortgage arrears crisis might not collapse the Irish Banks, the Government imposes a property tax which will have the effect of adding about an extra month of mortgage arrears in many cases. Deferral is not a solution.

If every mortgagor wrote to their lending institution withholding one months mortgage repayment because of the property tax payment, it would be an effective form of civic protest.

The Property register website values our house in the 150 to 200k bracket.
The letter they sent us values it in the 200 to 250 bracket.
The Property sales register show 2 houses sold in the last 18 months in our estate. 130k and 140k.

How the same people come up with 2 different values for our house, neither of which reflect reality?

I happen to agree with the concept of a means tested property tax, properly implemented, which has maximum and differentiated impact on trophy houses owned by high income earners and exempts modest homes owned and occupied by low income earners. It is the design and implementation of this property tax which is defective and unfair because its is not progressive and it impacts disproportionately on those on lower incomes. To understand this, you have to do a property value and household income matrix.

Introducing a property tax at a time of high unemployment, declining income, increasing mortgage impairments and increasing household expenses is clearly an act of economic madness and of political desperation.

Cyprus is a lesson on how the crisis is unfolding.

The Government feels the need to skin us alive to shore up the public finances. Will it succeed? It may succeed in its collection targets but it won’t stave off the looming disaster of loss of confidence in the banking system and the second shockwave to the Irish Banks caused by the black hole of massive mortgage impairments.

Not directly! Unlike the council taxes in the UK this levied in the owner, not the occupier. They may end up funding it indirectly through increases in rent, bit their landlord is the person who is liable for it.
