New York's only Irish strip club in tax evasion probe

Gallagher’s 2000 is located near the Irish neighbourhood of Sunnyside in Queens.

NEW YORK’S ONLY Irish strip club, based near the Irish neighbourhood of Sunnyside in Queens, is at the centre of a tax probe.

The owner of Gallagher’s 2000, Robert Potenza,  is being investigated for tax evasion, reports Irish Central. Potenza has opened his books for a federal court and maintains his innocence.

The New York Daily News reports that Potenza pays himself €1.5 million a year, and that hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash was found in the club, stored in a broken fridge, a fishing tackle box and on top of a beam.

It’s alleged that he made separate deposits in bank accounts in an effort to avoid paying tax, and that he pays his workers off the books. Potenza insists that he pays his taxes and says that the club simply takes in a lot of money. The authorities are looking to seize €900,000 from his accounts.

Irish Central reports that Irish clientele used to frequent Gallagher’s, but that is no longer the case.
