It's cold... but is the weather going to get any worse?

Let’s see what the experts are saying.

YOU’RE PROBABLY WELL acquainted with your hot water bottle or electric blanket (pro-tip – get an electric blanket) by now, thanks to the Arctic (alright, quite cold) temperatures currently sweeping much of the country.

Plus the status yellow gale warning is still in effect, as is a status orange national warning. The’re both due to end this morning.

But is the weather going to get any worse?

Met Éireann tell us it’s going to be “cold, very windy and showery today”, with some of the showers being heavy and with hail.

There will also be scattered thunderstorms – mainly in the west and north of the country.

yuck

Some of the showers will be “wintry” over high ground, which perhaps means sleet or snow. Or just very, very cold rain.

Some sleet can be expected in the northern counties this afternoon, with maximum temperatures 4 to 5 degrees Celsius in the north (sorry, lads) and 5 to 9 degrees Celsius elsewhere.

What else can we expect? Oh, just gusty westerly winds, some outbreaks of rain which turn heavy tonight, and clear spells and scattered wintry showers up north.

And it will be become “bitterly cold and frosty, with icy stretches” around the country.

Time to stockpile gloves, find those thermals you hid in the back of the wardrobe, and embrace winter like an old friend. Or duct tape the curtains together and bunker down with Netflix. Your call.
