@Brendan Kiernan: the thing about lgbt is they think they represent everyone in the community, but they don’t . I know many people who despise the event, it’s a total sham. This whole gay culture thing is phoney, ego based and the only reason people get on board is because they want to seem progressive.

I think being interesting to you or inviting your approval is not the purpose. It may even be the case that your antipathy is entirely irrelevant to those attending the Pride parade..

Personally, I am very pleased to see freedom, diversity, celebration and shared joy. I enjoy the spectacle, colour and liberated joy of the Parade and I am even happier that we have SSM in Ireland. I certainly would not begrudge the celebration of gay people. Look at the documentary on the history of gay people in Ireland. It was a truly miserable, oppressive and cruel time.

@Brian Ward: It serves to remind people that we have come a long way in the last 35 years.
When it was considered ok by Irish society the government and the courts to go out and beat someone to death for no other reason than been Gay, Lesbian, Bi, Trans or Queer Knowing the worst punishment you would receive would be a suspended sentence IF a big IF you were even charged.
It serves to remind everyone we are never going back to that.
It serves to remind everyone we are as Good As You.
It serves to remind everyone we are not second class citizens.

It is significant that the issue was about backpacks but you and your hijacked the topic of backpacks and tured this into an attak on Pride Parades. Your words and actions indict you and your ilk.

It just seems to me that these parades are for a bunch of drama queens who no longer have something to be fighting for and who miss all of the attention. Like I said before no one cares if people are gay anymore as we are all equal in the eyes of the law.

@Tony Daly: When I said “we” I was referring to the nation. If I had a problem with gay people then I wouldn’t have worked at 2 same sex weddings on prejudicial grounds now would I? Being gay isn’t so special anymore so these parades are just attention seeking exercises by people who fought for equality but when they got it now want to be treated as something different from the rest of the populace. I’d bet that in a few years these attention seeking exercises will just fade out and die when the participants realize that being gay doesn’t raise eyebrows like it used to.

Gimme a break. These things are small concessions, put in place to keep everyone a bit safer. It’s not a big deal. Bunch of whiny feckers ye :-)
