Temperatures reached -4 last night, so be careful on those icy footpaths

Hat? check. Scarf? check. Gloves? check.

WE HOPE YOU were prepared and brought your hot water bottle to bed last night, as temperatures plummeted to -4 degrees in some areas overnight.

If you’re sensible, you are snuggled up in bed right now, but if you have to venture out before midday there is still a status yellow ice and snow warning in effect across the country.

While Met Eireann reports that today will be cold and frosty, there is good news, as it should remain sunny and largely dry.

AA Roadwatch warns people to be careful on the roads this morning, but gardaí say that most roads have been gritted.

Frosty

Wrap up warm if you are heading to do some Christmas shopping as temperatures will struggle to climb to double digits, with the highest temperatures at 3 to 7 degrees. It’ll be coldest in the east, with light to moderate southwest breezes.

There will also be scattered wintry showers today along coastal counties of the north and west, with those showers becoming more frequent, with winds carrying them further inland during the day.

If you’re heading out this evening, forget style and best bring the parka coat as temperatures will fall to near freezing again shortly after dark. Again, it will be coldest in the east.

Were there any appearances of snow where you are? Send your pics to tips@thejournal.ie

The conditions of the main roads around dublin is a disgrace including the M50. The state authorities dare to preach to us about road safety & they wouldn’t even provide basic road maintenance like salting the roads. -4 is hardly a harsh temperature that the roads cant be kept clear of ice. Im glad we dont have temperatures like the rest of Europe at -15 or their would be bedlum. The roads in the capital of this country are not fit for purpose this morning.

It’s the ground temperatures that are quite low. Our station recorded almost a -8c grass temperature while the air temperature got close to -3c last night which is not quite as cold as the -4c recorded a few weeks back. December is running around 1.5c below average so far.

Im a truck driver. I just keep dublin supplied from Europe. I am a country boy from the second highest populated elevation in Ireland so im used to bad roads & bad conditions but no salt on motorways is just irresponsible on a whole different level & its the states responsibility.

I’d say it’s likely more expensive.

“Euro has colder stormier pattern later next week, right through the holidays! buckle up buttercup”
That’s from Big Joe over at WeatherBELL analytics’s who forecast the recent bad spells in the USA months before anyone else, this is a professional ad very scientific chap , not a tea-cup reader. Unusual for him the give a freebie warning for Europe and it may just be the Continent that gets hit badly as we shiver on the fringe :-) I can’t post Joe’s Sicilian sir name as it triggers the filters.
