Cattle-rustling: Man to face charges after border arrest

An illegal slaughterhouse was also found recently.

Updated 8.35 pm

A MAN WILL appear on front of a Meath court tomorrow after a multi-agency investigation into livestock theft.

The man, aged in his 30s, was arrested early today in border town of Castleblayney and will be charged tomorrow morning at Navan District Court.

He is currently being held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 in Monaghan Garda Station.

555 cattle have been stolen since the start of 2012, according to recent figures.

A cross-border group comprising the Gardaí, the Department of Agriculture’s investigations division, the PSNI and the North’s Department of Agriculture was set-up to examine the problem.

As part of their investigations, an illegal abattoir was also found recently in the border area.

Two people were questioned regarding that discovery.

I upgraded my Galaxy S3 (vodafone) to the latest version of Jellybean a few months back and it ruined my phone. The roll out of the update was stopped after about 24hrs when reports of problems started flooding in. They released a fix about 6 weeks later, but the phone was never the same again. Here’s an article on the issue – http://goo.gl/nBTjm9

Moral of the story – don’t take updates without doing a quick check for problems first!

It’s a case of ‘too many cooks’.

I’ve a HTC One at the moment and every time there’s an update, there are at least two causes of delays:
    1) HTC itself has to update Sense and tweak android so that can take quite a while.
    2) The mobile phone operator then gets stuck in the middle of the process and takes a few months to do whatever ‘customisation’ it does. I can’t imagine there’s all that much to do as mobile phone networks are all 100% compliant with a set of known standards, so it’s a bit like testing your washing machine for compatibility with electricity! I am guessing it’s more about installing their own annoying custom apps and logos on the boot screen.

So, basically Google releases a new Android version and maybe a year later I get it!

It’s making me think of either getting a Nexus phone (it would be nice if Google would actually sell them in Ireland and you didn’t have to pretend you were in the UK) or an iPhone next time as I really don’t like being that many versions behind from a security point of view.

    Hi David.
It’s not all to difficult to root your device and install a custom ROM. SlimRom is my current favourite and they are generally well up to date. I have 4.3.1 on my S3 and 4.4 should be out shortly.
And Slim adds nice features you don’t get in stock Android without any bloat.
All in all it’s the way I’d recommend you go.

For sure if your handset is still under warranty I’d leave as is but once it goes beyond the year old I reckon a custom ROM is the way to go.

This is exactly the reason why I went from Android to Apple. Android is great if you don’t want updates or you enjoy work arounds but for me, I just wanted my phone to work and with the latest version.

This is not a slam on Android rather the reason why (at least for me) people leave android for Apple.

People always male this apple to android comparison and its not very apt. The average android phone gets updates for about two years after its release. IPhone gets maybe 3 and even then itll be only half the features and often half brick the oldest device it goes on.

Android has some really poor problems on the worse manufacturers in updates but even then security updates are provided separately and now every android phone can get 50% of an updates features from the play store on the day of release. The fragmentation is a much smaller issue than it used to be.

Running 4.2 on nexus 5. Have to say cutting out the middle men in the process and the freedom to switch providers without being tied into a contract and having a very high spec phone for half the price the other providers are charging makes going Google so worth while.

Gorgeous phone too! The wireless charging is so handy. Get yourself a few chargers on eBay if you don’t have any they’re about $16 each.

Developers often like to give their releases a name that follows some theme. For example Apple used big cats as names for OS X releases for years (until they ran out of cats). Ubuntu uses animals and a descriptive word starting with the same letter, current release is called Saucy Salamander, debian uses characters from Toy Story movies, fedora just lets people vote (hence why one release was called “Beefy Miracle”).

What are the advantages in the new release?

Often updates compromise speed like MS Windows does. I remember XP running fluidly on 256mb RAM, then SP1, SP2 and finally SP3 meant that 1GB barely sufficed.

I still consider Android the best of a bad bunch, but I am getting increasingly annoyed with how updates are done on it. My current phone has a locked bootloader, and would require me to send the phone to Sony in order to get it unlocked. Sony consider the phone end of life, despite it actually still being a pretty fast and capable device, so I’m now in the situation where I will never get an update for this phone again. If there is ever some massive security breach in Android (which is a possibility as phones nowadays have more access to private information than any other device, making them a increasingly appealing target) then I simply won’t be able to update to a newer version to protect myself.

Ideally android would eventually start working like linux does, drivers are part of the kernel so updating to a newer version is very easy, and you can run the newest code for as long as the device is physically able to. Prior to that I can’t imagine buying another android device unless it is straight from Google, which is the closest to doing this, or I’ve been able to verify in advance that it isn’t completely locked down.
