The 5 at 5 5 stories, 5 minutes, 5 o’clock…

Updated, 17.59

EACH WEEKDAY EVENING, TheJournal.ie brings you five stories you really should check out by 5pm.

1. #NORWAY: An explosion has caused multiple deaths, and many injuries, in the government district of Oslo. The blast hit a government complex which houses the office of the Prime Minister, Jens Stoltenberg, as well as the Oil and Energy ministry. Stoltenberg is unharmed. Police have ordered an evacuation of the area. In a separate development, a man posing as a policeman has opened fire at a conference of the youth wing of Stoltenberg’s Labour Party, on the western island of Utøya, with fatalities also reported there.

More on Norway:

2. #CONGREGATIONS: The Sisters of Mercy have turned down an invitation to meet with the Minister for Education, Ruairí Quinn, on the subject of compensation for abuse victims in state-run religious institutions. The congregation says it’s been ‘demonised and misrepresented’ in recent years.

3. #RACE FOR THE ÁRAS: David Norris is two nominees closer to securing a nomination for the Presidential election – but can’t count his new nominators among his supporters. Senators Fiach Mac Conghail and Katherine Zappone said they would sign his nomination paper – but that they would both be supporting Labour’s Michael D Higgins come election time.

4. #NURSING HOME: The HSE has been granted a court order to take control of a nursing home in Callan, Co Kilkenny. The HSE and HIQA were concerned that the Avondale private nursing home did not have enough staff on duty at key times of the day, and that residents did not have sufficient recreational facilities.

5. #STREAKER: Gardaí in Killarney have warned the public of a streaker at the National Park in Killarney in recent days. The man has appeared at the Muckross Abbey entrance for the past few days, and is totally naked, but has yet to be spotted by Gardaí patrolling the area.

“FYI” is not an acronym. An acronym needs to made a word. “FYI” is an initialism.
