'A busy day for babies': Christmas newborns welcomed at Ireland's maternity hospitals

Azam Siddiqui was the first baby born on 25 December in Dublin.

BORN AT 12.12AM, Azam Siddiqui was the first baby welcomed into Dublin on Christmas Day.

He was the first of three babies born at the Coombe Hospital today.

He weighted 7lbs 4oz and was introduced to the media this afternoon.

His older brother, 16-month-old Moin, was delighted with his delivery from Santa.

A spokesperson for the Coombe said it was a busier day than last year, when they had no babies delivered before 11am.

It still wasn’t as busy as Cork University Maternity Hospital though, which said it has been busy all day long.

Their first baby was born at 12.26am, a little boy called Maitiú Moran. He was quickly followed by another boy at 3.29am, and two more 4.36am and 9.29am this morning.

There have also been “loads more” since then, a spokesperson said.

“It’s been a very busy day,” she told TheJournal.ie.

Back in Dublin, at the National Maternity Hospital on Holles Street, Sinéad Fagan from Meath had a baby girl at 17 minutes past midnight.

Emily was 8lb 12 oz when she was born.

The Assistant Director of the hospital said the wards have been “comfortable” all day but not as busy as last week.

“There have been a couple of sections but much better than last week,” she said.

Meanwhile, the Rotunda Hospital has helped deliver three baby girls.

The first, Christie Shannon arrived at 12.46am weighing 7lb 11oz.

She was joined by two more little girls, Agnieszka Stompor and Krishana Poonia, at 2.12am and 3.13am The newborns weighed 8lb 6oz and 6lb 9oz.

All three are doing well, the Assistant Director of Midwifery said.

They all have elder brothers and sisters, as well, she said, noting that none were first-time mothers.

His SECOND ethics adviser to resign.

When the first line of your job description is to remind an inveterate liar not to lie, you’re unlikely to be in your position for the very long…..

Johnson heads up a cabinet of rogues and expects the accolades for holding the highest office of UK government. A government happy to break the law. A government in cahoots with the DUP. A government of shady deals. Without principle. Without honesty. Working to benefit themselves and the tax evasion party they have taken over. When will the working people of England and Wales come to their senses and kick these racketeers out of government?

@Niall O’Reilly: the General public in England are deluded. I live here and honestly the rubbish they believe is insane. They think brexit and the tories will bring back mass manufacturing to England and that they will produce all their own goods. All the while the tories are tearing apart what’s left of the manufacturing and slowly privatise the NHS.
It’s hard to know when working class England will wake up, but I think when they do it will be too late.

@Aaron Tynan: — The propaganda machine is the only thing that’s working over there, and has been fully operational since before the referendum. Everyone I know over there voted for Brexit, and one of them who works in the NHS voted Brexit because she was convinced that the EU was going to destroy the NHS. I pointed out to her, after she voted, that people in the know had already named the people who were out to destroy the NHS, and that those people were members of the Tory Party, and that the EU had no intention of bringing the NHS to its knees. All in all, they think Johnson’s a great fella altogether, and don’t seem to realise that he despises most of the “converts” who decided to vote Tory after decades of voting Labour.
