Careful out there... An overturned truck on the M1, and icy, icy conditions elsewhere

If you’re heading for the M1, anywhere north of Drogheda, SLOW THE FECK DOWN.

GARDAÍ ARE URGING drivers on the M1 to exercise extreme caution this morning.

Icy roads have been causing driving difficulties across the northeast and the midlands.

And gardaí are still working to clear a truck that overturned between Junction 18 for Carlingford and Junction 17 for Dundalk.

Another three crashes between Junction 20 and Junction 15 were cleared earlier this morning, a spokesperson for AA Roadwatch said.

Gritters are now out on duty in the area.

In Meath, there’s black ice reported around Navan, and on the Kells/Athboy Road and the Slane/Drogheda Road.

In Leitrim, the Ballinamore to Dromod Road between Mohill and Dromod is impassable due to ice, and has been closed.

There are also reports of black ice between Cavan and Monaghan towns.

Drivers in the area shouldn’t expect too much respite from the weather later.

According to Met Éireann, there’ll be scattered showers of rain, hail or sleet later.

The showers will be mainly over the north and west of the country, with only scattered outbreaks elsewhere.

It will be staying cold, with top temperatures of 3 to 6 degrees.

A very cold night ahead too, with freezing fog in some areas.

Gritters now in place! After the collisions! Should’ve been out the night before or early early morning!

Ah here, less of your talking sense! We’re all about closing the stable door once we can see the horse is well gone!

Seen the gritters out last night at midnight on the M1. There was a heavy rain shower this morning that washed the salt off and caused the black ice.
Everyone is great saying how thankful they are of these lads that work all hours over the Christmas making the roads safe but when something happens that they could not control, they’re the first ones thrown under the bus.

I’ve seen them out every cold night on the M1 and the service stations off it. Maybe they were re-gritting a particularly bad patch.

Well said Pa, 100% spot on. I know what you say to be true as well. It’s a pity people don’t know what they’re talking about before they post on here sometimes.

I’m also surprised that they don’t complain about overtime/standby/call out charges.
