Ms Brown got more Irish bums on cinema seats than any other film last year

No messing with Agnes.

MRS BROWN’S BOYS D’Movie was the highest-grossing release of the year in Ireland, netting over €3.8million on home soil.

It raked in €18.3 million overall and it’s understood that talks are already underway regarding two sequels.

Ms Brown also did great on the small screen this Christmas – with 7.61 million viewers tuning in on Christmas Day in Britain (beaten only by the Queen’s speech).

The other films which ranked high in Irish cinemas this year were The Lego Movie and Gone Girl.

Here’s the top 10 films we went to see this year and how much they took in:

  1. Mrs Brown’s Boys D’Movie – €3.8 million
  2. The Lego Movie – €3.4 million
  3. Gone Girl – €2.6 million
  4. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes – €2.5 million
  5. The Wolf of Wall Street – €2.3 million
  6. Guardians of the Galaxy – €2.2 million
  7. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – €2.1 million
  8. 22 Jump Street – €2 million
  9. The Inbetweeners 2 –  €1.9 million
  10. X-men: Days of Future Past – €1.8 million

Fair play to O’Carroll, a real Irish success. His humour isn’t for everyone, but at least he keeps people smiling through these shit times in this country.

I’m usually delighted to hear an Irish film doing so well, but why did it have to be this film:( Well I suppose O’ Carroll knows how to appeal to his target audience really well.

Credit where it’s due. O’Carroll has made a fortune as an old-fashioned drag act with ancient jokes, but it’s hard not to like him. Just a pity the film was so cr*p, with all the laughs packed into the trailer.

If you want to get really depressed, consider this – on these numbers Mrs Browns Boys is the most commercially successful Irish film (by domestic box office) in the history of Irish cinema. Take into account the estimated €25 MILLION it made in the UK (see Box Office Mojo for the numbers) it is probably the most commercially successful Irish film ever made – or at least runs a close second to In The Name of the Father. Most Irish films are made at a significant loss (covered by the Irish Film Board’s investment) – the only two in recent years to make real profits bar Mrs Browns Boys are The Guard and to a significantly smaller extent Calvary – and people wondered why their director John Michael McDonagh didn’t want them thought of as Irish films!!

Most Irish movies are crap.. The snapper for example is one. It’s like a mortal sin not to tweet or Facebook when it’s on TV that it’s the funniest movie or best movie ever when in truth it’s bad acting, casting and directing. The guard was another crap movie with a terrible story that was embarrassing and had a patchwork storyline. We usually accept this as the norm and just because it’s irish it’s brilliant.

The film was a success off the back of the TV series . It was a advantage that other Irish films didn’t have . The film was ok but it wasn’t great but people where still going to go see it because of the series .

Fair play to Brendan O’Carroll for finally getting the success he’s worked for decades to get, but somebody really should tell him he’s allowed to do more than one thing in his career.

The fact the tv show is basically ripping off the “When The Whistle Blows” tv show segments that was in Ricky Gervais Extras Series!!! Mark Kermode summed up the “D’Movie” the best in his review: “If it wasn’t for the cast laughing at the jokes there wouldn’t be anyone laughing in the cinema”.

The film was a let down fm what I hear but as others have said it’s a success story abroad well in Britain. So that is a huge positive it’s nice to irish stuff in tv outside of Ireland. A pity love hate was such a failure but then it was shown on channel 5 which isn’t very popular in uk.

    Well done wee Brendan

40 year old jokes need an airing every now and then. Bernard Manning and Roy “chubby” Brown will be rubbing their hands with glee, and looking forward to the royalties from their original “jokes” I should imagine.
