Storms, wind and sunshine: Ireland's year in weather

It’s been wild.

WE AS IRISH people absolutely love talking about the weather.

Even when it’s not particularly remarkable, it’s a safe fall-back for Irish conversationalists,

And, this being Ireland, we saw all kinds of weather. From the early wind and rain to the lovely summer and the mild Christmas, Ireland’s weather has been varied this year.

Here are the year’s highs and lows from the country’s weather stations, according to Met Éireann:

Highest temperature: 25 July in Carlow – 27.6 Celsius

Coldest temperature: -9.7 Celsius in Greenshill, Kilkenny

Wettest day: 2 August at Dublin Airport – 84mm

Strongest wind: 159km/hr at Shannon Airport on 12 February

Windiest day: 12 February featured a 10-minute hurricane-force wind of 120km/hr at Mace Head

Sunniest place in Ireland: Belmullet, Co Mayo

Dullest place in Ireland: Knock, Co Mayo

The year featured the wettest February and November, the highest wave ever recorded in Ireland (25 metres off Kinsale in February) as well as the least windy September on record.

I had a chuckle at that, only in Ireland could there be such a contrast in weather only miles apart

Get up the yard, the last few years the weather’s been grand. Had a grand bit of sunshine this past summer, and the one before was proper el scorchio! It’s better it’s getting, not worse!

Last years high winds will be seen again at the end of February to March this year if the wind patterns over Africa are to be believed, which is said to have an effect on the jet stream every 14 months. This might have an effect on the easterly winds making them more westerly then but who knows?
