Rubbish dumping still a problem around the last remaining flats in Ballymun

They are set for demolition in June of this year.

RUBBISH DUMPING REMAINS a problem in Ballymun despite clean-up efforts from the local authority.

In a statement, Sinn Féin Councillor Noeleen Reilly has expressed disappointment at the dumping in the area – especially as it had been cleared prior to the Christmas period.

“It is a sad sight walking around the area on New Year’s Day and seeing rubbish literally dumped everywhere.  I arranged a number of clean ups before Christmas and the area was pretty clean come Christmas Eve,” she said.

In her statement, Councillor Reilly identified the remaining flats on Balbutcher Lane as being a “particular black spot” and that “the sooner the flats are demolished the better as they are only attracting anti-social behaviour and fly tipping”.

The last remaining tower block is set to be demolished by the early summer. The flats are now empty with residents having been relocated to new houses and apartments.

In her statement Reilly praised the efforts of Dublin City Council – which was involved in a clean-up effort on New Year’s Day.

In response to a query from TheJournal.ie, a spokesperson for Dublin City Council said:

The council has arranged for the area to be cleaned. Dublin City Council liaises with the local community to tackle illegal dumping in the area on an ongoing basis. We would appeal to people not to engage in any illegal dumping or littering.

A ‘Bring Centre’ was opened on Collins Avenue on 27 December – where members of the public are able to dispose of recyclable materials.

Roy thanks but I agree also. It was a sardonical exposition of the situation where the likely culprits are also probably complaining at the filth.

Good idea Sean, but to be shamed you have to have a sense of shame and these people don’t. The shame is for the decent people in the area.

Ballymun is no different to anywhere else that people get something for nothing, if you have to pay for your own house and pay your way you will have more appreciation for it, if you are given something for free or next to nothing then you won’t give a s*** about it

Ballymun was built, I would compare it as a sticking plaster for the government at the time, a housing crisis that was dealt with, with no regard for the people that had to live in an after thought, not to mention advice given by German officials not to build, the flats. And again our leaders ignore good advice.

They were designed as luxury apartments to be built as a one off block in England for rich people and the Irish just borrowed the plans and built them en-mass. It is not the blocks that are the problem it is the type of person that gets something for nothing rather than earning it that dictates how the area turns out. Mespil Apartments in D4 are just as ugly but the people renting there don’t dump rubbish all around them.

Think back to the days when life was more simple.. You could leave out your bins every week and the nice bin men came and collected them, same bin man you’d have seen for 20 years and all you had to pay was a fiver or tenner at Christmas. Roll on now and we’re paying bin charges, water charges and property tax too.. Why couldn’t life stay simple.

Because they promised too many state pensions and passed that debt onto the next generation in order to inflate the price of housing as people had more of their income to spend on it but then the next generation didn’t have as many children as the previous one so the tax base didn’t enlarge and now they have to charge us for everything. This means the only people who can afford to have children are the welfare class who pump them out as it increases their wealth which increases the money working people get robbed from them. The two biggest chunks in the budget are the pensions and welfare. The working people are being fleeced and will continue to be fleeced and there is no party who stands up for them. All we have to look forward to is more immigrants disguised as asylum seekers and visa farm students to increase the price of property, lower our wages and plunder out welfare system.

@gkrell Unfortunately, most what you say is true. The common working man in Ireland does indeed carry a terrible burden. I understand the hospital system is screwed, there appears to be a housing crisis and I know animal shelters are full to overflowing. The boom in the economy which was accompanied by a booming population of foreigners has been followed by a bust in the very fabric of Irish life. Many of these ‘asylum seekers’ turned out to be welfare tourists but don’t call them that in public or you’ll be branded racist. I abandoned Ireland some years ago now but still miss it, however the Ireland I miss disappears down the plug-hole more & more each day.

Well done everyone. “Everyone living in Ballymun is a sc um and there are no decent people there” is the vibe I get every time there’s an article about Ballymun. Does it feel good to be able to look down your noses at other people just because you’re from a different area than them?

Nothing to do with “where” they live, totally to do with “how” they live.
It’s not confined to Ballymun, there are disgusting people all over this country, just look at the beaches on a summers day, beer cans, dog crap, dirty nappies etc.
A lot of filthy people living in this country.

I remember back in the 80′s I lived in a freezing cold bedsit at the Phoenix Park end on the North Circular road. I was a FAS trainee at the Cabra training centre. I went out one evening for a few pints with one of my colleagues and ended up crashing on the floor of his flat in Ballymun. I woke up sweating in the morning as the underfloor heating had cranked up during the night. They were fine flats, well constructed and it’s a shame they ended up attracting the bad name they did.

These flats are empty, and if you are wondering how the rubbish gets there its because, since the inception of Ballymun its beem treated by the media as a shit hole. There are people there that have had to deal with, the stigmatism of drugs, poverty, unemployment. Even to this day it’s still the same. Love hate prominently characterised Ballymun. The Ballymun Shopping centre especially. And those photos in the background of the last of the flats, with nidge et al in the foreground. Love the series, but I dont like the use of recognised disadvantaged areas as story backdrops.
