If she must go out and “test her skills”, as Adam Scott seems to think she may have been doing, then perhaps she needs to bone up a little on the skills of common sense. She appears to have been alone, according to the story. Did she ever learn first principles? Did she ever learn the basics like not venturing out alone in difficult/dangerous conditions? Only a certain breed of amadán tries something as utterly reckless and stupid as this. Accidents happen, for sure, but many of them are preventable, This one certainly was. A hefty bill for calling out the services, and putting rescue personnel at risk, might cause her to rethink her strategies next time.

The wind was bad enough on lower ground so i can only imagine it must have been almost like a hurricaine on higher ground… I’m glad the person in question is ok and we weren’t reading about another fatalaty over christmas as we have had more then enough. Well done to the rescue services, without them we would there would be a lot more lives lost on land and at sea…

As a regular outdoor enthusiast I do my sports at times when people think it’s ‘mad’.

Part of doing these sports at such times is to push your self in skill and technical ability.

Every time I read one of these articles people are the first to point out the weather conditions, how selfish they were etc. Also people say – “charge them for the rescue services!”

If that we the case everyone who leaves their house on a orange or red alert should all be charged/condemned for slips, trips & falls (ice/snow season) or car crashes during those times as opposed to the accidents they were. Because

    “They should have stayed inside”

How about you go test your skill and ability at flying a helicopter in storm force winds to pick up some plank who thinks walking up a mountain in storm force winds is a test of her skill and ability. There’s a difference between walking to the shops in a storm and putting yourself in harms way purposely, knowing that if something goes wrong some brave rescue team will have to risk their lives to come and get you. That’s not a test of skill and ability, Scott, it’s evolutions way of weeding out the idiots.

Believe me – even the most serene of days can catch people out with broken legs, heart attacks and other medical conditions.

And even the most serene of days can see rescuers get injured. Whether integer just getting to the station.

An accident is an accident and one that happens ‘not far away from a car park’ in a mountain should not be looked at less favourably/judgemental than some ones car getting flattened by a tree on the same day in the same weather conditions.

Sorry Adam, I don’t think you can argue that it’s ok to hike up a mountain during a red alert warning and then also say that there is an equal chance of a tree being blown over and flattening a car. If it can do that to a tree I would imagine the exposure on the side of that mountain will make it pretty dangerous for a person. Argue all you want, you’re wrong all day long.

Your internal voice should tell you it to act in such a stupid fashion so as not only to put yourself in danger but those trying to rescue you too. This act is indefensible . All those people wanting to test their skills should become part of a rescue service and see how they feel their skills are after taking another outdoor person off a mountain with a red alert in place. Think they might need to go home and g change their shorts if they had to do real tests of bravery like this rescue crew.

Acceptable risk for yourself us one thing. Do what you like with your own life. Just don’t expect others to take risks on your behalf. People take those risks knowing there are rescue services out there as back up. They don’t do it alone. Knowing this they should take responsibility for the other lives they are putting at risk. Innocent lives who really don’t give a crap about skill tests acceptable risks or experience or training of the idiots they gave to go pick off a mountain in red alert weather conditions. Do that if you must but sign a waiver saying you don’t want to be rescued if you come a cropper because of your own stupidity. Then everyone is happy .

Also driving a car inside a speed limit is one thing . Reckless driving or drink driving is just as bad but there would be consequences if you did those things. You would have to answer legally. Putting yourself in needless danger is a choice you should only make for yourself not for your potential rescuers.

yes adam, and the whole reactionary response. I was meant to climb carrauntuohill last week but I didnt go out of laziness.my choice. The others in my group went and it was a risk in the wind.Their choice.
There have been a lot of people out climbing this winter with no incidents. One bad incident and they all come out of the woodwork despite this country having much bigger issues that they could complain about such as suicides and people strugging with mortgages.
Instead of complaining they could always go on to mountaineering ireland, educate themselves so that they will be be safe if they ever take up climbing. A lot better tahn dissing a woman who just made a stupid mistake.

A stupid mistake that put others lives at risk. Clearly she was not able to make a responsible choice about risk . Risk yourselves all you want . Don’t expect others to do the same to rescue you. You want to lose your own life because of your stupidity then do just don’t risk others and cost the country and the taxpayer either. Why should others pay for her stupidity? A totally avoidable accident.

catherine im sure tax money is been wasted in much worse ways that you can complain about.
you say dont expect the rescue service to rescue you for stupidity?
If you feel that way inclined then why dont you campaign to have it removed alltogether? Im sure lots of tax money will be saved.
I have a friend who was rescued rock climbing in the gap of dunloe last summer after a fall. If it wasnt for the mountain rescue people he would have been paralysed.
you could consider it stupidity and you reckon they should have left him there:) Great:)

There are no real mountains in Ireland so these clowns have to wait until the conditions are really bad so they can pretend that they are Hillary or Mallory. Years back it was one of the amusements in the bar of the old Taylors to laugh at the the oddballs with the big boots and bobble hats setting off up the hill BUT only when the forecast was bad, you would never see them on clear days :-)

The coastguard teams are voluntary and only their gear etc is paid for. Except for a nominal fee they get for fuel to get to station etc.

CHC who run the coastguard rescue choppers have signed a 10 year deal at 50 million a year no matter how many times their called out.

To be honey I don’t see any of this being a waste.

To be fair we don’t know the lady’s experience level. But she could have been well within her comfort level and just came a cropper to an accident.

If someone was walking along the lower walk in Glendalough and got to the miners village and she suffered a stroke, cardiac arrest or broken leg they may have tasked the mountain rescue team and R 116. Same amount of resources tasked and it wouldn’t be perceived as reckless.

My only feeling is people don’t really understand outdoor sports, acceptable risks and the way out rescue services are run.

Saying that let’s be thankful to the rescue agencies but lets also not bash people for accidents. She didn’t go out to break a leg and get a chopper ride.

To all the nice people leaving their animated comments , fueled by none of the facts and lots of conjecture.
She was one of a group of four, all experienced and properly equiped, the accident happened about 500 metres from the finish on a relatively flat even surface (grass), and resulted in a broken bone. Highly uncommon result from such an accident. The windy weather did not play a part in her fall which mostly due to the wet ground.
If like suggested above people shouldnt go out in such conditions, wet ground would put a stop to quite a lot!!

This is one of the bad sides of social media where anybody with an ill conceived opinion can vent and toss around accustions and blame.

A big thank you to Dingle Coast Guard, the Air/sea rescue crew, the mountain rescue team who were on stand by and everybody else helped out to make a text book extraction in bad weather, they were amazing.

Paul my son is frontline emergency response and I can tell you now that my son and others like him are not entitled to have his life put in danger because of the blatant stupidity of others. You can say he chose his profession and his voluntary work ( as he does both) this is true but remember he did this to help people in trouble not those who purposefully put themselves in the way if harm and secondly if he and his colleagues decided not to do their jobs that women would still be where she fell. I hope she is charged for every penny of the call out to rescue her. Also if I put my child or my elderly parents in danger there would be consequences. Everyone is entitled to be selfish but no one is entitled to out someone else’s life at risk for no good reason. There is such a thing as taking responsibility.
