The cleanest town in Ireland is...

They’ve won three years in a row now.

KILKENNY HAS BEEN crowned Ireland’s cleanest town for a third year in a row by Irish Business Against Litter.

Kilkenny was up against Cavan, Longford and Tramore in the final, but won out in today’s awards ceremony in Dublin today.

The litter league tables released earlier today shows that Dublin’s north inner city, although showing improvements is still the second most littered area in the state.

Hat trick

Welcoming today’s win, Chairman of Kilkenny Tourism, Colin Ahern said:

It is a great achievement to win this prestigious award for the third year in a row. Kilkenny is used to getting hat tricks on the hurling pitch but it is great to see we are scoring off the pitch also.

Ahern said tourism is very important to Kilkenny and the local economy and that the award will give visitors another reason to visit the medieval city in 2015.

He said the win is a culminations of the hard work put in by the local authorities, local businesses and the wider community, adding that there is great team spirit in Kilkenny.

Ahern added that each citizen takes pride in the city and are “working to make sure we put our best side is out for the thousands of visitors who come here every year”.

“The more people who visit us the better it is for the economy so its a win for everybody”.

Conor Horgan spokesperson for Irish Business Against Litter said:

Kilkenny’s sustained success has set the standard for others to follow, in demonstrating year after year that it is possible to keep a busy city, which entertains lots of visitors, consistently free of litter.

    @Rodger 5:
    We did not have a viable sugar industry in Ireland, it was heavily subsidised, when the subsides were withdrawn it died.
    Bottom line, it costs roughly the same to grow 1 acre of beet in Ireland as in France, in Ireland you would do well to produce 3 tonnes of raw sugar from that acre, in France it would be at least 5.
    We cannot compete on the world market.
