Twitter/Charlie Hebdo

Charlie Hebdo's history of lampooning Islamic extremism (and religion as a whole)

The magazine has been attacked before.

THIS MORNING’S FATAL gun attack on Charlie Hebdo is not the first time the satirical French magazine has been violently targeted.

In November 2011 the magazine was petrol bombed after it published a special issue temporarily renamed ‘Charia Hebdo’ featuring a guest editor listed as “the Prophet Mohammad”.

The magazine’s offices were completely gutted but their response was embattled. The next week they published a front page cover with a picture of a Charlie Hebdo cartoonist kissing a bearded Muslim man.

The caption read, ”L’Amour plus fort que la haine” meaning “Love is stronger than hate.”

That example is part of a sustained history the magazine has displayed in asserting its right to lampoon people and issues in the news, often Islamic extremism.

A year later, as worldwide violent protests followed the US release of the low-budget Innocence of Muslims film, Charlie Hebdo took the opportunity to publish obscene images Mohammad.

One of the images showed a naked turbaned Mohammad exposing his backside. French ministers questioned the timing of the publication of the images but supported the magazine’s right to express its opinions.

Visual depiction of the Prophet are not allowed under many interpretations of Islam. The reason for this is a concern that such depictions would lead to the worship of the founder of Islam.

The magazine’s consistency in its caricaturing Islamic issues was in evidence as early as this morning when they tweeted a cartoon of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the self-proclaimed emir of the so-called Islamic State.

But the magazine is far from focused on Islam as its target, with organised religion more widely often bearing the brunt of its satire.

A special issue published this month for example featured an image of the Virgin Mary with her legs spread giving birth to Jesus underneath the title, ‘The True Story of Little Jesus’.

Finbar he didn’t just attend he was a speaker that spoke to the masses. His siblings also addressed the crowd. His father brought a known right wing cleric of whom was banned in many countries for his anti women and anti same sex couple rhetoric to speak in Clonskeagh in 2011. And teh family has many links to radical Muslim Brotherhood clerics in the middle east.

I am unsure whether this bit is true but he was born in late 1995, but his family came here in 1996. Which makes me question whether in fact he was Irish born?

Would love to see news channels, websites and newspapers the world over republish more of Charlie Hebdo’s work in a collective show of solidarity against these disgusting animals, showing them and undoubtedly the millions that support their actions, that we will not be held silent against their threats and one of the pilars of democracy, free speech, will be upheld.

Its high time that Muslims the world over learn to understand that like us they have every right to feel offended but not to take up arms against the perceived offence.

Paul, I do consider Holocaust denial freedom of speech. If people want to make absolute fools of themselves by denying the historical fact of the Holocaust, I believe that is their right. I am a firm believer in the 1st Amendment, and have noticed how in Ireland and also Europe freedom of speech is less well protected than at home.
I am open to correction on this, but I am not aware of any law banning Holocaust denial in the US, whereas there are many European countries that do. I can understand the reasoning for holocaust denial laws as some have argued that Holocaust denial equates to anti-semitism. Obviously, holocaust deniers would generally be anti semitic, but they should still be free to give their ridiculous views.

Censorship is censorship, whether it’s banning a film or shooting up an office of a satirical magazine, both incidents are a attack on freedom of speech. We are at dangerous crossroads here and everbody need to calm down , I suspect some reprisals will take place against mosques and muslims throughout Europe which will already put more oil on the fire , which is exactly what these extremist want. It is through their love for God that many countless people volunteer to work with the poor, the sick, the homeless, the elderly, etc. Indeed, the Catholic Church is the largest provider of charitable aid in the world. Not all religions are equal, only the ignorant would think that they are.

What happened today was disgusting beyond measure, and certainly raises questions regarding the sensitivity of some Muslims, if not the culture that has grown under the guise of their religion.

There are very interesting, and referenced, facts within this link: http://www.familyfacts.org/briefs/41/religiosity-and-charity-volunteering that highlight the positive correlation between religious belief/Church-attendance and volunteering/charitable-giving. Quite interesting reading. Essentially, it suggests that believing in God makes you a kinder person.

Unfortunately, I don’t believe for one minute that those who killed in France today believed in God, or if they did, they didn’t give a damn about what He thought of them.

Here is the plot: A comic magazine Charlie Hebdo is renowned for producing controversial anti Islamic cartoons. The news is too fresh for a debunk.

Three well armed “terrorists” stormed the place with machine guns ablaze while screaming “Allahu Akbar”.

Terrorists escape completely, while shooting at police all over Paris, 11 dead.

Question: Do Muslims always scream Allahu Akbar while they run amok shooting places up? With no one identified, and only that phrase for incrimination, ANYONE COULD HAVE DONE THIS and that is IF it even happened and it is not just another psych op. Two recent “Islamic” terrorist attacks have fallen flat on their faces with discrepancies, one in Sydney and the other in Pakistan, Time will tell on this one.

Supposedly they had a rocket launcher, who supplied it and how the hell did they get that through customs?

Well…almost. I don’t recall the word ‘excessive’ being used but yes that is the rule. I presume you are using the word ‘excessive’ to make a point? The third law applies as a general rule but of course would not apply to unstable chemical compounds where the application of a force is deliberately applied to provoke an excessive reaction. That is why we treat such materials with caution and respect.

Mark, free speech is not an unqualified freedom. That is why we have our own rules in this country about slagging off or mocking certain minority groups like travellers and indeed coloured people and rightly so because it is in the wider public interest.

For example, I doubt that you would want to take the risk of walking into a pub in certain parts of this Isle and start slagging off or mocking those who hold different values or beliefs to you, like say the Lawnbrook Workers Club in Shankill. I know I wouldn’t. Hiding behind the use of media and terms like freedom of expression is merely, for some at least, an opportunity to bully and mock others for their own self gratification and sometimes even money or fame. I think that it was Edward Bulwer-Lytton that coined the phrase that ‘the pen is mightier than the sword’. In todays world of multimedia it has become so much easier to offend and insult others without regard to the offence caused. I do not carry sympathy for those that deliberately choose to provoke others. Even within our criminal law, provocation can be a defence and mittigation in certain circumstances.

Nice stephen, the old ad hominem. I’ll put my tinfoil hat on if these men are caught, if they are not caught my suspicion has some foundation.
Such attacks are not beyong vested interests, educate yourself on the USS liberty incident.

Ha, cheap shot but a good one.
I already said that what happened was disgusting and disgraceful irrespective of who did it, get over it.
I’ll keep my conspiracy for a few days until we find out if anyone gets caught and more importantly we’ll see if anyone will “benefit” ftom this act of terrorism.

These “terrorists” (Professional Hit men) will not get caught because they will be needed for their next pro Zio Western Government police state “mission”. You never know, they may even end up in the UK.

    Paul Flynn_ very true.

And no doubt French front line police will follow their USA and UK counterparts and have their “professional” training carried out in Tel Aviv.

It won’t be too long before we will be reading horror stories of unarmed civilians getting shot left right and center across Europe, Adolf Hitler built up a militarized police force. It was called the “Gestapo”.

    @Paul
I get the feeling that most conspiracy theorists actually enjoy the idea that there’s some giant conspiracy by a small group of men to take over the world, and doing so by coming up with the craziest of plans. This would explain the wackiness of a lot of the conspiracy theories (and their intolerance of rational thinking). They either border on fantasy, or are straight out of a sci-fi film. Then when they’re confronted with some kind of rational thinking, they’re brought back down to earth, and they don’t like it. As a result of this, they get quite aggressive, and simply accuse you of being asleep/sheep/shill.
There is very little tolerance for opposing views amongst conspiracy theorists. Just something I’ve noticed. It’s as if they desperately WANT there to be a giant conspiracy, because it gives them a kick believing they’re fighting against some powerful, secretive group.

John, if I were to give you irrefutable evidence showing that several people control most of the world through the fraudulent monetary system you wouldn’t bother reading it, works both ways. The federal reserve in the US is illegal under their constitution, yet there it is, making decisions that effect the whole planet.

Honestly no I won’t read that. You see our problem in getting our message across is the following – any mainstream news/media/website is owned by these very people.
Most people rate the credibility of a media outlet by its popularity, which would be similar to claiming that mc donalds is a michelin star restaurant. We’re in the catch 22 position of having to supply ‘crackpot’ websites while all the “credible” websites say to the contrary.

Er Frank you havent noticed be chance that the French and German police forces already have and have that list of hardware for decades? The French moreso as their police force is more para military than the Germans…
Getting that kind of hardware isnt that difficult when you consider the fact that across the Med there is a former French colony that is Muslim. Two days drive puts you in the Balkans and into close contact with plenty of arms dealers or a trip to Kaliningrad by Germany and Polamd can get you this hardware no pronlem.
no big conspiracy there I m afraid.

The religion of peace at it’s finest. Islam is not a “Religion of Peace” it is a Fanatic Cult on the same level as Nazism. These Killers are only following the dictates found in the Quran/Koran. Look at this video and spread it far and wide in the hope that it will open people’s eyes.
