Bertie Ahern at the Galway Races in 2006 Leon Farrell/Photocall Ireland

'Bertie, you b****x': Former Taoiseach gets an earful in Galway

Bertie Ahern was heckled at the Galway Races – but some other Fianna Fáilers were counting their winnings…

AN ANGRY PUNTER heckled Bertie Ahern as he arrived at his old haunt the Galway Races yesterday.

Racegoer Brendan McCarthy from Limerick shouted “Bertie, you bollox!” at the former Taoiseach as he strolled into the grounds. Mr McCarthy later explained to Barry Moran of the Irish Sun (print edition): “He was here during the good times and then he fecked off when the bad times began. It annoyed me when I just saw him swanning in here without a care in the world. He’s got some cheek.”

Seeing that Bertie was headed for the restaurant, Mr McCarthy continued: “He’s going in there now to eat chocolate mousse – sure that’s too good for him.”

According to the Irish Sun, Mr Ahern actually tucked in to slow-roasted prime sirloin with mash.

The Irish Independent reports that when asked about his opinion on the presidential race which he was once widely expected to enter, Mr Ahern told reporters: “Ah sure they’re welcome to it. Let them at it.”

However, other Fianna Fáilers were having a better day. Former Finance Minister Charlie McCreevy will be enjoying a share of €11,385 in winnings after his wife Noeleen’s horse Catch the Eye came first in the day’s last race. Asked how the man once known as ‘Champagne Charlie’ would want to celebrate, Noeleen told the Irish Times: “Charlie will want to go straight home.”

All the red arrows down. I presume this has been shared on Twitter by some FF’ers getting their zombies out to support the Bert. Although give FF’s track record it could be the UFF trying to defend the man and party who damaged Ireland to a degree that they never could.

McCreevy is as emblematic of the ruin of the country as Ahern. They were both advocates of vote-buying and bling politics, without a sound economic policy between them. And how much do we tax the bloodstock industry these days?

“You people seem to forget that the whole world is in a recession and not just ireland and everyone is to blame and not just one man. Get real!”… Perhaps you should practice what you preach, Caitriona. Bertie significantly helped the bankers who created this mess by allowing deregulation and his cronies to line each others pockets at the expense of the people of Ireland. He nicely side stepped aside out of the limelight and shirked responsibility when the shit hit the fan. Very good strategy indeed. The fact remains that this happened on his watch, so the buck stops with him…The biggest fraud in the history of Ireland, the biggest transfer of public wealth into private hands in Irish history and no one is held responsible??…Maybe you’re not one of the millions in this country affected by what has happened, or lost your job, your house, or has had loved ones move away to the other side of the world to find work, I dunno, but what I do know is that this man should not be given a pat on the back and a ra ra ra “go bertie!!” chant, he deserves to be in jail with a few more like him, who have FAILED epically in his duty as Taoiseach and to the people of Ireland…..Shame on him. And anyone who believes that this man will have any remorse, regret about his actions, or shred of decency would want to wake the hell up.

You are joking I’m sure Caitriona! Our country, due to economic Glasnost that had its roots in the 1950s, was once in a good position to prepare for any global downturn by sound economic policies, and to weather it due to responsible financial planning, investment in education and shrewd manpower planning. Instead, we had Bentleys, bling and Bertie’s Bubble and now we’re broke! Ahern and McCreevy (“thure, if I have it, I’ll thpend it!!”) were the most irresponsible policymakers in any democracy in living memory. I can’t believe anyone in the country still needs to be told this!

Daniel, people who contribute to discussions such as this are generally interested in news and policy etc., whereas those who voted FF, especially the second and third time, were either only interested in their own pockets and how to line them, or so disengaged from political and economic reality that all Bertie had to do to be elected was grin and wink down from a lamp post, promising wedges of someone else’s money. Still, it’s interesting that in daily life, nobody will admit to having been either.

I agree with Elizabeth. The gutter vernacular is the most appropriate vernacular for describing gutter politicians like Bertie Ahern. And quite frankly, I do consider that many of us still have our heads up our a***s. We did not cause this mess and I can think of no reason why we should have to pay for cleaning it up. Especially when I think of the pensions etc payable to Ahern and his cronies; they should be in jail and all their property confiscated. With the crooked bankers and property developers.

But Elizabeth is right. We do still have our heads up in our a***s.

You can’t put all the blame on “crooked bankers and property developers” for the mess we are in, its not entirely the banker’s fault that people borrowed beyond their means, yes the amounts borrowed should never have been offered, but I think at least 50% of the blame should be on the people who borrowed the money, don’t you? I think that the atitude of trying to blame someone else is part of the reason that we are still in this mess! And yes the Governement is to blame for not regulating the lending in this country but I think the EU should also have checked if the government was regulating lending properly, and it obviously did not.

I agree that some people did borrow beyond their means, but there is a huge difference between someone borrowing 10 grand for a car, and a property developer getting a loan of a couple of millions to build houses or apartments. Also when people borrowed they had a steady income to borrow against, if the government had of listened to the economists that a bust was coming, rather than encouraging that level of spending, many ordinary people may not have borrowed in this way. It was a false economy that was based on the lunacy of markets and speculation on property. The government did not invest in any sustainable indigenous industry that would create long term employment. So when the crash happened, boom-reliant industry collapsed, people lost their jobs, could not get employment in jobs with the same level of pay, could not pay loans let alone buy property. The government were warned to slow it down and all they cared about was votes. The government of any country, in my opinion has an obligation to manage the economy. Fianna Fail bought into Boston style economics and lost out, and 5r paid representatives of the people, they are to blame

The people of Ireland are getting screwed several times over and the government are thinking up new ways everyday to screw them even more! All because of the mistakes of a greedy few ‘Big Boys’. The sad thing is that the government don’t have any choice but to do what they are doing because they are being dictated to by Europe. The bottom line is that it is NOT RIGHT! People are suffering through all sorts of pain, stress, insecurity, emigration and suicide. It is time to stand up and make their feelings felt and fight back by taking to the streets every single day in their thousands. Look at what people did in Greece, Thailand and North Africa. Bertie and the likes at the races? They should all be in jail for economic treason!

How can we take it seriously when for the past 4 years the post has been hijacked by an imposter, yes, an imposter who was not voted in for a second term constitutionally but appointed by a government who used the premise of building bridges and a ‘peace process’ which was so full of cracks, to further her appointment.
The shameful treatment of Dana whom the left were terrified of in case she refused to sign any of their abominable laws concerning abortion, same-sex marriages etc into law, if she were elected.
