Leo's warning: Junior doctor changeover and flu cases could cause more problems

We’re “not out of the woods yet” according to the Health Minister.

Updated 6pm

HEALTH MINISTER LEO Varadkar has said that while significant progress has been made in tackling the overcrowding crisis in the country’s emergency departments, we’re “not out of the woods yet”.

Speaking to RTÉ’s Marian Finucane he thanked medical staff who had, he said, pulled out all the stops to address the problem over the last week.

“Next week, the junior doctors change over, and that’s always a difficult time in the health service,” the Minister added.

There is some evidence that influenza might be on the way — and if that happens we’ll be in great difficulty.

There’s been a renewed focus on the overcrowding issue in recent days after nursing union the INMO said on Tuesday that the numbers on trolleys had exceeded 600.

Varadkar said official figures showed there were 525 people on trolleys in emergency departments on Tuesday last — the highest number in four years.

Today’s figure was 209, he said, noting that the INMO had changed the way it counted trolleys in recent years to include people in wards.

Either way, he said, the figure was still “far too high”.

“Nobody should be on a trolley for more than nine hours,” he said.

Brian Lawless Brian Lawless

While there are now no patients on trolleys at a number of facilities, there are also a number of hospitals where it’s still a major problem, he said.

In Galway University Hospital, there had been “difficulty finding staff to open beds” while in Drogheda there has been a shortage in “available nursing home beds”.

“A surge like this is not unique to Ireland,” the Minister added, noting that similar problems had been experienced in Belfast.

Fergal Hickey, a consultant in emergency medicine in Sligo General and spokesman for the Irish Association for Emergency Medicine, warned earlier this week that the upcoming changeover in junior doctors would result in slower processing of patients.

“Monday is the busiest day in hospitals, by far,” he said.

“Therefore it’s not a particularly good day to be changing over junior medical staff, rather than the middle of the week.”

He said that in “a perfect world” such changeovers should happen at times when hospitals are less busy, in February and in August — rather than in January and July, as currently happens.

Varadkar today also condemned consultants who are refusing to accept new patients, saying this is “unacceptable”. However the minister stressed this is limited to a dozen or half a dozen consultants of the more than 3,000 working in the Irish health system.

Geographically nothing. Ireland is not part of Britain full stop. Eire is not an actual word. It’s a derivative made up word from the name of a pagan god Eiriu. Eireann is correct as is used correctly in the national anthem.

Don Juan, the word used in Amhrán na bhFiann is ‘Éirinn,’ the dative case of ‘Éire.’ ‘Éireann’ is the genitive case, indicating possession. The word is still ‘Éire.’ Yes, it’s a contrived word. So are lots of words. It’s the correct name of the state in Irish.

Aidan thankfully nationality isn’t as rigid as or as outdated as you have to be from where you a born and that’s it. Otherwise Saoirse wouldn’t have an Irish passport now would she? The irony of this conversation is the British, especially in sporting terms, would be decimated if such a rule was enforced. I’ll give you a few examples, Bradley Wiggins= Belgian. Chris Froome = Kenyan. Justin Rose = South African. Mike Catt = South African. John Barnes = Jamaican. Owen Hargreaves = Canadian. Raheem Sterling = Jamaican. Terry Butcher = Singapore. We won’t even talk about cricket or the Polynesians in rugby. But you know what, they have all said they are British/English so who are you or me to tell them they are not.

PJM, contrary to your claim that the British Isles as a term ‘is not recognised internationally’, you may find that you’re actually in the minority as far as the rest of the world is concerned.

I suggest you try having a sift through the foreign-language editions of Wikipedia – the site doesn’t seem to allow me to post links, but here’s a quick guide:

    French – Îles Britanniques
    Italian – Arcipelago Britannico
    Spanish – Islas Británicas
    Portuguese – Ilhas Britânicas
    German – Britische Inseln
    Polish – Wyspy Brytyjskie
    Russian – Брита́нские острова́ (‘Britanskiye Ostrova’)

For the record, I think the Sky newsreader is being an idiot. At the same time, I hate political doublespeak as far as geography is concerned.

That would make Saoirse Ronan; born on the continent of North America to a British Citizen who moved to an island(Ireland) not far from his original home within the North Atlantic Archipelago. When it’s broken down like that it doesn’t seem as much fun anymore and we should just call her a North Atlantic Archipelagon. See what I did there with the ‘n’, made that up myself.

I’m well aware of this, George. I was illustrating a point. Renaming neutral geographical terms for political reasons doesn’t unknit reality and just looks silly in the end.

Greece refuses to recognise that there is a country called Macedonia, simply because part of the area historically known as Macedonia also lies within Greece and they hate the idea of foreigners confusing the two – they will refer to the modern Slavic state as FYROM (Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia) and have lobbied incessantly to make other countries adopt this stupid, ugly acronym.

The majority of UN members, thankfully, have refused to go along with this nationalistic baloney and will still refer to it as Macedonia. Including Ireland, as it happens.

This is why I hate the ridiculous “British Isles” term. People say it’s simply a ‘geographical’ term as if there’s any such thing. All names are given by someone, there’s always a history and an agenda. No name is just geographical. Then there’s the persistent feeling among many British that Ireland is still British in some way as it’s in the “British’ Isles as we see here.

    Infuriating.

The British Isles is a geographic term. It was in usage long before there was any concept of ‘Britain’ as a national-level political entity. It is not and never was meant as a political term. The term has only become politicised through misguided nationalism and false etymology.

Want proof? The official name of the UK is ‘the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland’ (and before then ‘the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland’). At no point in history was it ever referred to as ‘the United Kingdom of the British Isles’. So much for the ‘agenda’.

There was a very good reason for the Easter 1916 Rebellion.
The rebellion was about Irish self respect.
We should respect people who don’t buy into being “British”.
Or that strange family the English kneel and grovel in front of called “The Royals”.
I am a liberal and I love England.

Jackson: He’s pretty hot in the U.S. too.

Thornton: Yeah, but he is one of our own.

    Jackson: Isn’t he from Ireland?

Thornton: Yeah, but we can claim him cos Ireland is beside us.

Jackson: You see that’s your problem right there. You British keep claiming people that don’t belong to you. We had that problem here in America too, it was called slavery.

The Irish race are not Brythonic, so the term British being used to describe Ireland and the Irish nation is a non sequitur. The Irish, Scots and Manx are Gaelic, and the Welsh, Cornish and Bretons are the remnants of the ancient Britons. It’s the English that claim everyone of these islands as British, and what they mean is Anglicized. It’s little wonder that they continue this affectation as it seems in their mindset that England and the English would cease to wield effectively on their own, and the reason it continues is we allow this nonsense to continue by Ireland imitating all that is perceived as “British” by the English, and calling it Irish within Ireland . A good example of this is the Irish humor which at it’s roots is that of the thick Irish, and endemic in the Irish psyche from years of Anglo-Saxon influence. The best way to deal with this is to ignore it, and not get into the erroneous and fallacious attitude of the English that claims these islands as some special entity apart from the rest of Europe. The Irish will only be truly free when they see the true falsehood of continued reference to the larger island to its east.

Lack of sefl-confidence as a nation is what it is! Same with Fassbender. He describes himself as a ”citizen of Europe”, not Irish. No-one has the right to decide what nationality a person is when they weren’t born in this country.

Many of us here in Blighty don’t really care if DDL calls himself Irish. Or if Ireland claims him as one of their own. His personal life is his own matter.

Saoirse Ronan wasn’t born in the UK, isn’t a UK citizen and to the best of my knowledge she hasn’t tried claiming it, so Sky’s newsreader is clearly being a plank in this regard.

So disappointed at the discontent over this. I see the term ‘British’ as representing those people from the small countries of England, The Isle of Man, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Why is it one cannot identify themselves as both Irish and British if they choose to? Stop building a divide and build a bridge!!! I wish someone would create a term that would make all people within the British Isles (Ireland, The Isle of Man and Great Britain) feel a common pride as well as one of their individual heritage (Irish, Manx, Welsh, Scottish, and English). It is 2016, building bridges is smarter than emphasising the differences and furthering the divide.

Yeah well, never underestimate the ability of nationalists in ANY country to go searching for insults both real and imagined. Here in Britain we have a cult of morons going about insisting that we are not Europeans. Nationalists by their very nature define themselves not by what they are, but by what they are not.

The old lie. Successful Irish people such as
Rory McIlroy are suddenly British. Liam Neeson must be another brit…and Colin Farrel..JFK and on it goes. Shows a complete lack of journalistic ethics. Did you see how Sky covered the London Olympics. Totally biased.as if there was only one country participating, and that one Team GB of course.

There is no mention of the British isles in the thousands of years that the Irish language has existed. In Irish the term An Bhreatain, was never used in reference to Ireland, but in reference to Britain (An Bhreatain Mhór) and Wales (An Bhreatain bheag).

The original inhabitants of Britain used the term “Prydain” for Britain, and this has been in continuous use in Welsh – but it refers to present day Wales, England & Scotland.
Ireland on the other hand has always been known as Iwerddon in Welsh. There is no word for both Ireland and Britain, either in Irish or Welsh.

To state that it is a geographical term would be false as the channel islands off Normandy France are included when their link to Britain is purely political, and not geographical.
The French governed island of Chausey which is beside Guernsey and Jersey is not included, which highlights again that this term is intrinsically political and not geographical.

This term is never used by an Irish person, but is understood to mean Britain and the Isle of Man.
The Irish embassy in London never uses this term and have been instructed by the Irish government not to use it.
During negotiations of the Good Friday Agreement the Irish government had this clarified.
