Twenty planes diverted away from Dublin Airport as 'Storm Rachel' gathers pace

Flights have been diverted to either Belfast or Manchester.

Updated at 3.59pm

SOME PLANES ARE being diverted away from Dublin Airport because of high winds.

The move comes as ‘Storm Rachel‘ continues to batter the country.

This afternoon Dublin Airport confirmed 20 aircraft have been diverted due to high winds.

A number of arrivals and departures at both Dublin and Cork airports have been delayed. Flights too and from Shannon are running more or less on time.

A spokesperson for Aer Lingus confirmed that six flights from the UK had to be diverted to Belfast today. This video shows an Aer Lingus plane coming into land and then abandoning its approach:

Prospective passenger are being advised to check the airline’s website for details of any flight changes.

An ‘orange alert’ wind warning remains in effect for Dublin, the rest of the east coast and counties Monaghan, Roscommon, Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick and Waterford.

The red warning that was in place for Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo has now been downgraded to orange.

These strong winds are expected to continue at Dublin Airport for the coming hours. The ‘orange’ warning lasts until 6pm.

Different aircraft have different tolerances for cross-winds

Generally, the smaller and lighter the aircraft the worse the problem, although even within the same class of aircraft there can be differences – an A320 can land in a stronger cross-wind than a 737.

Whether the runway lines up with the prevailing wind make a difference too. Shannon’s lines up with the prevailing wind, which means it has fewer problems than Cork and Dublin, which don’t

Chris, I read an article some time ago that explained that Cork Airport was built in a very bad location when it comes to wind. The advice from the experts at the time was that the site for the airport was unsuitable due to it’s high exposed location. Despite the advice and with political pressure it was built on the site regardless.
Cork is a notoriously difficult place to land when the wind is up.

Sorry Chris, I think you got mixed up, the B737NG have better tolerances in crosswinds and windsheer than the A320 family, the rest of your post is good though

Kinda sucks, when you are shipped to Manchester instead of Dublin, but beats a crash, wonder if the airlines will have to provide the passengers with hotels, food, or alternate means of transport, but considering the ferries aren’t going either, they’re probably stuck in Manchester for the time being.
