Ask.fm is cleaning up its act ... with a little help from this Irish expert

The controversial site moved to Dublin last year — a move that caused some concern amongst ministers.

CONTROVERSIAL WEBSITE ASK.FM has appointed a five person safety advisory panel to help tackle cyber-bullying and other online security issues.

It includes Dublin-based expert Dr Brian O’Neill, who, in tandem with his role as head of DIT’s school of media, also serves as director of internet guidance group EU Kids Online in Ireland.

O’Neill also chairs the Government’s advisory group on internet content, set up at the end of 2013. Ask.fm was linked with the deaths of Leitrim teenager Ciara Pugsley and Donegal schoolgirl Erin Gallagher that year.

It relocated to Ireland last November — a move that caused some concern in Government…

However, the service’s new boss has since committed to making the site safer for users. In an RTÉ interview carried out in the wake of the Irish move, Doug Leeds distanced his vision for the website from that of its Latvian founders, and outlined a number of new safety procedures.

The purpose of the new advisory panel is to assist Ask.fm “with a global view on industry-leading guidance, research and best practices as it develops new polices, procedures and strategies for enhancing user safety on the site” a statement said.

“Children’s use of both the Internet and mobile devices continues to shift rapidly, and key to ensuring youth safety online is an understanding of what motivates them, and their use of the technology,” Brian O’Neill said in the statement.

I look forward to teaming up with my peers in this space and guiding Ask.fm toward evidence-based strategies to keep younger audiences safe and responsible as they navigate their digital worlds.

@blackcoffee: At OUR expenses and who elects them. The reson the housing crisis is not being solved is because DAIL has no control over the MONEY NEEDED TO OD IT. How did this happen .

FF gave min for finance unfettered and indefinite power to pledge public fund for banks if in his opinion and govenor of central bank is was in the best interest of the state.

    under it

1 Brian Lenihan sent p note to govenor of the central bank pledging 34 billion if Anglo failed to pay it borrowing. To TAKE OVER debt of Anglo Irish to foreign banks

    AND

2 Signed a deal with EU and IMF for money to cap banks and pay public bills subject to condition of honouring p note and a programme affecting tax and use of public funds to cap banks if they fall below EU standards TERMS not laid before Dail for debate and approval or referral back via minister for a better deal for taxpayers.

Taxpayer carrying NTMA borrowing cost to purchase bonds of twenty five billion from central bank. Anglo Irish, INBS and IBRC loan books vest in the state. The banks borrowers owe money to the state. But govt thru liquidator sold to v funds. The central bank holds twelve billion euro of bonds.

The Minister in that deal made under that legislation took unto him cbi and eu commissions decisions on taxes raised and how they are used has been between minister and eu commission under terms of that deal ; Pension ages, Public pay, Carbon Tax Property Tax , water charges , budgets , estimates and housing policy and repossession proceedings.

The carbon Tax that not DAIL decision it is MIN AND EU COMMISSION alocated to osme joint committee but it the Commission and Min setting the rate COS CARBON TAX IS A TERMS OF DEAL ?

Dail is having no say at all but it was TDS and only TDS can gave DAIL control over budget to a min who gave it to commission on terms never laid before dail under art 29 5 2.

Can Min who signed the deal and got the money seek to change terms. E Kenny found out NO and in response liquidated IBRC. But DAIL can .

But TD have had no trouble at all abandoning DAIL power and duty over public fund to min for finance and EU Commission ? For as long a voter take it.

    nOT THE govt tds.

@John Meade: how the EU’s position of not negotiating the backstop means there could be a hard border. May attempted to renegotiate and was told to take a hike, which pushed us closer to a hard border.

The UK parliament is a big problem in this, but the EU is stubborn too.

@Dave O’Keeffe: Precisely its between the EU and UK incl N Ireland. Leo Varadker rolls over cos of deal between Min for Finance and EU/IMF under which min agreed that state taxpayer will .

1 Honour promissory note issued by B Lenihan for 34 billion and in effect pay of anglo debt to intnl banks

2 cap bank if the fall below EU standards plus a waft of measure in tax and pay and pensions to be implemented under EU Commission supervision as a condition for money.

Taxpayers owe EU 55 billion plus cost of NTMA borrowing cost to buy bnds issued to cbi and to pay of anglo Irish bank debt BUT terms of this not laid before DAIL ..

How can minister go back to the LENDER to change terms ?? Kenny thought he could and liquidated IBRC when he could not. Stll not working.

But DAIL CAN but TD willing to let EU Commission and Min negotiate on carbon tax ( terms of deal) the property tax ( term of deal) water charge ( terms of deal) nurses pay ( terms of the deal ) DAIIL saying NOTHING AT ALL cos terms not laid before Dail.

a change of government will not change that cos DEAL IS SIGNED AND MONEY DRAWN DOWN AND NOT LAID BEFORE DAIL .

NTMA has paid the central bank FIFTEEN BILLION EURO for bonds . Money borrowed by NTMA, may be from same bank that lent to anglo Irish bank, that taxpayer has to pay back while CBI take money out of circulations and merely cancel the bond.

That fifteen billion of tax payer money could build thre metro lines and DAIL had no say at all in that borrowin by NTMA cos TD chose not to insist on the terms being laid before dail . B Howlin did the same on the decision by govt to take another three biillion to pay of IMF last year.

TD will go on until voter tell them we gave u no mandate to give that power to one person?
