French post office hostage-taker surrenders to police

The city is still on high alert in the wake of the attacks that killed 17 people. A fresh hostage situation is developing today, at a suburban post office.

Updated 1.57pm

HOSTAGES HAVE BEEN freed from a post office in a Paris suburb, with the hostage taker giving himself up.

A police source told AFP that the man who holed himself up in the building with two hostages surrendered.

He is now in police custody.

“”There was no assault, the man gave himself up”, the source said, adding that the hostages were “shocked but not injured.”

The incident comes in the wake of last week’s attacks that killed 17 people. However, local reports are suggesting the incident was not terror-related.

The raider is believed to have been armed, according to French TV channel BFMTV.

There is no known link with last week’s jihadist attacks, according to the AFP report. A helicopter is flying overhead in the area.

@Brian Boru: who exactly are the radical left here is Ireland? Are you ignoring any blame that the far right contributes to racism?

    Remember the definition of a right wing or conservative;

1.Not willing to respect or accept behaviour or opinions different from one’s own; no openness to new ideas.
    2. A political and social philosophy that restricts individual rights, civil liberties, democracy and free enterprise (unless the market benefits leaders and donors to their political party)

    ….think maga republicans or brexiteers.

We’re lucky the far right here is makes up 0.1% of the voters in Ireland. We’re educated.

@Paul Furey: your description of right wing could easily also apply to the left.

@James Reardon: I think you mean the far left, but by definition you are not generally correct.

    This is from dictionary.com

    “What does left mean?
In politics, the word left is applied to people and groups that have liberal views. That generally means they support progressive reforms, especially those seeking greater social and economic equality.

The term far left is often used to refer to those who are considered to have more extreme, revolutionary views, such as those who espouse communism and socialism. Collectively, people and groups, as well as the positions they hold, are referred to as the Left or the left wing.

    What does right mean?
The word right, in contrast, refers to people or groups that have conservative views. That generally means they are disposed to preserving existing conditions and institutions. Or, they want to restore traditional ones and limit change.

The term far right is often used for more extreme, nationalistic viewpoints, including fascism and some oppressive ideologies. People and groups, as well as their positions, are collectively referred to as the Right or the right wing.”

Racism in the US is associated with maga republicans/ republicans/conservatives/right wing/nationalist groups such as KKK, Proud Boys etc.

Racism in the UK can be associated with brexiteers/conservatives/right wing/far right.

The far right movement raising it’s head across Europe is not good news for immigrants. The far left, who have “extreme, revolutionary views, such as those who espouse communism and socialism”….are kind of lost in the mix somewhere these days.

But hey, the finer details can be debated all night.

@Paul Furey: oh dear, there you go again with your sweeping statements. So Brexiteers are far right? What about the Unions and other left organisations who are and were Brexiteers?

“We are educated”? Are you suggesting Britain and US are not, despite having the vast majority of highest ranking universities between them? I am not sure about educated, but you are certainly deluded. Look at the EUs own report in racism within the EU, from 2020 so UK included. I am of the left, but you and you’re sweeping statements are no better than those bemoaning immigrants. Prejudice is prejudice.

@Brian Boru: the far left ideology which I thought was about everyone is free to be who they want and say what they want etc turned full 360 into a fascist aspect of saying what you can or cannot say. Trying to change lyrics and words to songs and stories written in the past. Controlling speech is a fascist way of doing things that the left have taken on board with lgbt etc. It’s actually just sad.

Based on her position as a Lecturer and her title, I would have to assume that Dr Ebun Joseph is an educated person that specialises in Black Studies, yet she poses this question by way of both an indication and accusation of institutional racism in Ireland..

“How can you explain it that you go into many organisations today and everybody is white?”

I have to wonder if Dr. Joseph has ever asked herself, why it is that when you go into many organisations in African countries, everybody is black?

That alone is not an indication of racism, it’s a simple reflection of ethnic realities in a country, that is unless you are looking for indicators of racism, then anything can be framed as an “indicator”..

‘How can you explain it, that you go into many organisations today and everyone is white?’… well because it’s a Western European country where the native population is white. That’s not racism just reality. Same reason most organisations in sub-Saharan African will be exclusively black.

Bullying and micro aggression are endemic in the workplace here, coming from customers as much as other staff. You don’t have to be a ‘person of colour’ to be on the receiving end, nor does it always come from ‘native’ Irish.

I have worked in offices where a manager will just take against someone. Often there’s no obvious reason, just individual bias. I can’t imagine starting a new job, being called into the manager’s office and told that you smell! It’s not surprising that he felt humiliated. I hope further workplace experiences go much better and more fairly for him.
