Energy regulator backs 22 per cent gas price rise

Bord Gáis had proposed a 28 per cent rise due to the increase in wholesale gas prices this year.

THE COMMISSION FOR Energy Regulation (CER) has proposed that Bord Gáis impose a 22 per cent price increase.

The price hike will be 6 per cent lower than the increase suggested by Bord Gáis itself, which said that a 39 per cent increase in wholesale gas prices this year meant it would have to raise prices by around 28 per cent, the Irish Times reports.

The company must seek approval for any price increase it wishes to apply as it has an 80 per cent share of the residential market, RTÉ reports.

The regulator will now monitor wholesale gas prices and conduct public consultation before making a final decision in August.

CER expressed regret at having to recommend an increase in gas prices, but said that this was “unavoidable” considering the current market conditions, reports the Irish Independent.

Does this mean that John Mullins the head of Bord Gáis will be taking a 22% reduction in his massive wage? I don’t think so and I bet he doesn’t have to pay for Gas in his home. Bord Gáis made over a billion in profit last year.
F%%king greed, that’s all this country’s about, thought things would change with the new government, but I forgot they don’t have to worry about paying their bills because we the tax payer pay it for them.

Meantime, despite Ireland’s desparate need for native resources and our precarious energy security position, we’ll still see the Shell to Sea mob and the new “Disciples of Gasland” opposing any energy development in Ireland.

Let’s all live in the 19th century…it was great then.

Hugh, the people you are talking about do not oppose energy development in Ireland. They oppose the way it’s done at the moment. It is the government that sell Ireland’s natural resources for nothing to Shell and it’s the Shell to Sea protesters that object to that and the irresponsible way of harvesting the natural resources.

And don’t forget that the government will get more taxes from this increase. Not many from FG or Labour will oppose this.

Jul 28, 2011 – Bord Gáis had proposed a 28 per cent rise due to the increase in wholesale gas prices this year.(2 years ago the reason for a 28 % was due to wholesale price . Add on the carbon tax Now they looking for 7% for transit costs .This will push many households who are already over the edge .
