Gun maker to boycott Liam Neeson after his curse-filled anti-gun tirade

The Taken star said private gun owership in the US is a “f***ing disgrace”.

A US GUN manufacturer is looking to disarm Liam Neeson’s career because of comments he made about there being “too many f***ing guns out there.”

Gun manufacturer Para says it regrets providing guns for use in Neeson’s recent film Taken 3, and said it will not be arming future films starring the Antrim actor.

In the Taken franchise, Neeson plays an ex-CIA operative who regularly shoots his enemies, but in an interview with Gulf News he said he doesn’t think such movies are the reason for gun violence.

“There’s too many f***ing guns out there,” he said.

Especially in America. I think the population is like, 320 million? There’s over 300 million guns. Privately owned, in America. I think it’s a f***ing disgrace. Every week now we’re picking up a newspaper and seeing, ‘Yet another few kids have been killed in schools’.

Para wasn’t happy with the comments from the Taken star, saying his views reflect “a cultural and factual ignorance that undermines support of the Second Amendment and American liberties”.

Not only has Para pledged never to supply weapons for a Liam Neeson film in the future, but they’re also encouraging their “friends and partners” in Hollywood to join in the boycott.

Neeson was born in Ballymena Co. Antrim in 1952, he grew up during the so called troubles and saw first hand what firearms can do in the hands of the “culturally and factually educated”, if these fools want to debate this point with him, its their mistake.

Its neither stupid nor inaccurate. Funnily enough in countries where there are strict gun laws and where guns aren’t readily available people don’t just walk into schools and open fire on each other. When guns are as freely available as they are in the US anyone can gain access to them including Teenagers, kids and people with mental illness. In certain states it is easier to get a gun than it is to vote. It’s a pretty warped sense of logic when you can legally purchase a firearm at the age of 18 but are breaking the law by buying a beer at the same age.

In the recent coverage about Martin Luther King, I read an article that shows that while many Americans love and respect him, most media coverage cherry pick from his speeches and never show his speeches and writings from the last two or years of his life. In those couple of years his focus on injustice widened, and he began to talk about social injustice and social inequality across all races, not just blacks. It was basically what many would describe as a socialist message, but this part of his legacy continues to be ignored. There are areas in America, that if they were in Africa, Concern would be there.

The number of guns isn’t the problem. The problem is that in many US states acquiring a gun licence requires no training in how to safely store, transport and use firearms. It’s perfectly fine to have a large number of guns (a la Canada or Switzerland) so long as regular training and medical or psychological checks are in place.

Whatever about the ‘Second Amendment and American Liberties’; what about the First Amendment which is ‘Freedom of Speech’. Surely this is just as important. Are people not allowed to voice their opinion on a subject which is proven factual. What are the gun companies afraid of? Less sales of their products because some actor highlights an important issue? If anything, is the use of their guns in these films, not an advertisement for their product? Not condoning it, just making a point. Seems like to me it is fine from the gun companies point of view to advertise it through a film, just as long as you don’t come out saying ‘guns are a real problem in society’. The second amendment was written a long time ago and needs to be ‘amended’ to the present day. Stop hiding behind an archaic law and shouting ‘It’s our right to bear arms’. Its to easy to say that.

Just as Liam Neeson is free to voice his disapproval of the Second Amendment, PARA are free to voice their disapproval of his public statements and refuse his custom in the future.

As for advertisement, firms like PARA don’t manufacture their own distinctive firearms so the advertisement value is minimal. They actually get more free advertisement by announcing they’re never dealing with Neeson than they would hope to see by dealing with him.

Film producers tend to try and avoid the big names wherever possible because their firearms are highly recognisable and, thus, more expensive. Companies like PARA manufacture guns (in this case, the Browning 1911) which are past their patent protection date so any gun manufacturer can make versions of them with the right tools.

Anthony, the Second Amendment was to insure that the American citizen could form a militia to fight the English or future dictator. So an “Assault” rifle is not unreasonable to fight in modern warfare like smart bombs or attack drones. Do I think people need fully auto rifles? No I don’t. In the US you need a Federal license to have that and it’s impossible to get.
It was not about hunting, in 1776 if you didn’t hunt you didn’t eat.

What planet are you living on? We don’t have a gun crime rate like America, Guns here are illegal and the police force on both sides have been cracking down on firearms. it’s nearly impossible to get a gun here

Always nice to follow the Yanks ranting about their amendments. Let them be and ignore them. Neeson is American and has every right to challenge the issue, this is such typical American behaviour that will see them looking over their shoulder more and more.
