Fly to Australia for €200? Not with Ryanair you won't

The low-cost airline is looking to provide connections for long-haul carriers, but won’t be flying long distance itself anytime soon…

RYANAIR CEO MICHAEL O’Leary has admitted that the Irish airline will not be running low-cost long-haul flights for at least the next five years.

The budget carrier is poised to implement the latest part of its growth strategy (or making itself look less mean to the layperson) by working with long-haul carriers to provide connecting flights to London’s Stansted airport.

The admission came at a news conference in London to announce the prospective partnership with Stansted.

The latest move is a logical one from both sides – Stansted is Britain’s fourth busiest airport and a major short-haul carrier hub but has no access to long-haul carriers at present, while for Ryanair it will be a case of increasing their load numbers without incurring extra costs.

Speaking to TheJournal.ie Stephen Furlong, transport analyst for Davy Stockbrokers, suggested that Ryanair is unlikely ever to go long haul.

“Ryanair themselves won’t do it, regardless of what is hinted at. They’re such a huge player in the Euro market and they have no widebodied aircraft so it simply won’t happen,” he said.

But you can see a scenario where network long-haulers play in with them.
Stansted wants long-haul flights no question, and Ryanair now has an American website which they could use to market these connections to the US, it’s a strategy that has been well worked out.

Davy continue to rate Ryanair, along with would-be Aer Lingus takeover merchants IAG, as their marquee picks in the European airline market for the foreseeable future.

For now, the low-cost airline’s ‘transformation strategy’ is yielding dramatic results – profit guidance for O’Leary’s company has been raised four times already for financial year 2015.

“If you go forward in Europe in the next five or 10 years, I think the low-cost carriers, mostly ourselves and EasyJet will do a lot more feeding of major airlines,” O’Leary told the news conference.

There may be issues of course, I wouldn’t want Ryanair flights delayed because another connecting long-haul flight is late for instance.
But we are not as black and white as we used to be, we’re less dogmatic and I’m learning that we won’t rule anything out.

Continued growth combined with entry to main airport like zavantem, Madrid etc can only be good for FR and Ireland inc. Long may Michael reign.

Flew with Ryanair to Brussels Zaventum recently and back with Aer Lingus. The differences between them on that route are now indistinguishable- both use air bridges on the Belgian end.

Actually, Aer Lingus was worse – my well-worn assigned seat came off in my hand as I went to sit down, whereas the Ryanair employee generously offered to lift my bag into the overhead bin for me!

Fly to Auz for €200??? Are you joking ? Try book Ryanair to Alicante @ present and it will cost up to €500 return with Ryanair as against €125 from Stanstead to alicante with yes you got it right Ryanair- the above prices were quoted on the same day of booking & travel from each place – Why??? Because there’s no competition! There are numerous other examples for all to see as to how passengers from Ireland pay through the nose as against prices charged to their Uk counterparts

Airports massively compete for business in London too, resulting in lower costs for airlines.

What is? All the London ariports compete massively for traffic, offering airlines alls sorts of incentives and inducements to use their facilities, to increase frequencies and to launch new routes. Inducements would include lower landing fees, no landing fees for new routes, lower costs check in desks, marketing costs and more. LGW, LHR, STN, Luton, City and now even Southend compete hugely for new business.

Jason there is no travel tax in Ireland there is in the Uk- charges in Irish airports are more than comparable with uk airports & that’s a fact. I think Ryanair does a great job on some routes but on routes where there is little or no competition they charge through the nose! Worse than the Aerlingus of old! Check it for yourself!

Yes I know, I regularly fly to Krakow, as my wife is Polish and since EI pulled out FR have increased prices, but I can get good deals to Katowice or Wroclaw still. However, what I said about airports competing in London is not “absolute bull” and significant savings are made by airlines in cities with competing airports, as opposed to monopolies like DUB.

One flight a day as opposed to 2 or more democracy. It’s a huge price, no denying that but other things come into play such as demand and amount of flights a day, take off and landing slots, and that’s were landing charges etc affect airlines. Not trying to justify that price but there’s a lot to this and not just simple factors.

Boganity, cheap shot, Ryanair would easily get one if those it it was required as they have an amazing safety record. They’ve never had a crash, unlike EI.

Jason there are two reason why airlines never crash, they either have a strict safety and compliance culture, or they’ve been lucky…so far. Only third world airlines don’t hold a safety certificate, and three Ryanair aircraft declaring emergencies because they ran out of fuel and had to divert is a poor safety record by any measure. Both of these issues are why Ryanair never made the recents world’s top 450 safest discount airlines list. There’s a reason Australia hasn’t had a commercial airline crash is over 70 years, they’re very strict on safety and don’t let airlines, like Ryanair, without the highest safety standards into their airspace. Ryanair haven’t had a catastrophic crash for one reason, luck, and all luck runs out eventually. Like most Irish people cheap airfares are blinding you to the facts.

Ryanair did not run out of fuel and still had their reserve tanks. The 3 aircraft you mention in Spain were exonerated by the Irish and Spanish safety authorities. The issue came down to weather and circling. Facts are facts and to say they ran out if fuel is a bare faced lie. Safety does not come down to luck. It comes down to training, aircraft maintenance, fleet updates bad many other factors. Nothing to do with luck and your grudge against FR is very apparent. Deal with facts not conjecture or bias.

I’ve taken a gamble and booked two Ryanair flights to fly Faro-Stansted-Cork for 60 euro one way in total. I’ve nearly a two hour gap in Stansted. If Ryanair flight No 1 is late Ryanair will presumably screw me to rebook on to the next flight. Still I like a little flutter. Has anyone any experience of doing this?

Jason, I am well aware of that. That’s the gamble I’m taking. I do notice that in their insurance policy that it covers missed flights under certain circumstances, e.g. a public transport problem, but it’s not clear if the insurance covers a late Ryanair flight. I would have thought that Ryanair would make more money allowing A-B-C flights, even if we have to book them one at a time as if I didn’t do this I would have had to get a train to Cork and they would loose the STN-ORK flight sale. All I ask is that if the first Ryanair flight is late, rebook me on the next without charge. I don’t want any other compensation. Can’t see how they can loose that way.

Paddy, I’ll have carry on luggage only but if the plane is fairly full and you are getting on after the first 90 or so they put your carry on bag in the hold. A side effect of the recent change to allow two bags. That can delay you changing planes. I think I’ll fork out for priority boarding :)

    Seems unlikely to materialize…

Given a few Thomas cook summer charter flights to Orlando and Las Vegas are currently the only long haul carriers operating out of Stanstead and no airline operating out of the UK currently has made any inclination towards intent to begin operating from Stanstead.

I can’t imagine any mainline airlines have an appetite towards buddying up with Ryanair.

Why would they want to sell them cheaper and make more of a loss as part of a ryanair itinerary?

What a skewed and bias article, Journal! RyanAir are a short-haul carrier, and have never positoned themselves as a long-haul carrier. Every carrier looks to maximise their business with partnerships with larger carriers or link smaller airports to big hub cities. Aer Lingus partner with KLM and numerous other European and Asian airline partners because it means they don’t have their paid employees located in those areas to run those hubs, which is more expensive. Yet again, you’re looking to present ‘news’ as just social media click-bait.
