In numbers: Dublin Bikes

A new record has been set for the number of Dublin Bikes journeys made in a single day…

AS DUBLIN BIKES sets a new record for the number of journeys made in a single day, the number of users of the scheme has now risen to around 59,000.

6,280 Dublin Bike journeys were made on 13 July, more than on any other day since the scheme’s launch in September 2009.

Here’s a closer look at Dublin Bikes… in numbers:

  • 6,043 – the previous record for Dublin Bikes journeys in one day, set on 15 April. The new record is now 6,280.
  • €10 – the cost of an annual subscription to Dublin Bikes.
  • 14/08/10 – the date the one millionth Dublin Bike trip was made. That number has now risen to 2.2 million.
  • 44 – the number of Dublin Bike stations currently operating. That number is set to expand greatly as the service moves into the suburbs.
  • 13 – the number of minutes an average Dublin Bike journey lasts.
  • 30 – the number of minutes you can cycle for free. After that it’s 50 cent up to one hour, €1.50 up to two hours… A full breakdown of the rates is available here.
  • 550 – the number of Dublin Bikes around the city
  • €150 – the security deposit you must agree to provide in the event that a bike is not returned within 24 hours.
  • 60 – the number of seconds you have to press the unlocking button on a Dublin Bike at its stand after entering your PIN and choosing a bicycle. You then have 5 seconds to removed the Dublin Bike.
  • 67 per cent – the percentage of long term subscribers who are male.

Brains behind the bike scheme is Dublin’s new mayor>
