Google responds to Uber rumours with a cryptic tweet

The search engine giant was said to be working on its own lift-hailing service, but doubt has been thrown on the claims.

UBER HAS SEEN off much competition and controversy on the route to a $40 billion (€35.3 billion) valuation, but for a moment, it looked like one of its closest allies would become a rival.

Reports that Google was preparing its own lift-hailing service emerged after a Bloomberg piece cited a source close to Uber’s board. It said that Uber had seen screenshots of the service and were considering whether to ask Google’s Chief Legal Officer, David Drummond, to leave the board as a result.

Neither Uber nor Google responded to the rumours directly, the latter referring to a cryptic tweet that mentioned both Uber and one of its biggest rivals, Lyft, as a way of addressing the rumours.

It was believed that Google’s upcoming service would be offered in conjunction with its driverless car project, which has been in development for a number of years.

However, the Wall Street Journal reported that the upcoming service was actually an internal app which helps Google employees carpool to work. The service was made by a Google engineer and it wasn’t associated with the company’s driverless cars programme.

Uber counts Google Ventures as one of its biggest investors, having invested $258 million (€227 million) into the company back in August 2013. A number of Google’s services such as Google Now and Android Wear are integrated with Uber as a result.

The four-year old company has faced a significant amount of criticism concerning its business model, how it gathers data, and promotions to name a few. Despite that, it’s one of the fastest growing companies in the world, recently hitting a $40 billion (€35.2 billion) valuation.

Uber also announced a strategic partnership with Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), which will focus on the “development of key long-term technologies.”  The company will work closely with staff both on campus and at the National Robotics Engineering Center (NREC) to carry out research in areas like mapping, vehicle safety, and autonomy technology.

Didn’t some inspectors report say St Patricks was very bad for these poor misunderstood youths…so they closed it and moved them all to Oberstown….it is now overcrowded, many staff have been seriously assaulted and now the little f*****s are burning the place down.

The cuddly wuddly approach doesn’t work.

Put them all on an abandoned island with access to medieval weapons and watched by hidden cameras. Sell the rights to the TV companies. Instant win.

This is the Government’s Hug A THUG policy in all’s it’s glory. It’s never the poor unfortunate 17 yr old ,6foot tall, uneducated, socially deprived, learning disability suffering, never had a chance childs fault. Or the correct term for them is Criminals and this Government will get staff in the detention and prisons killed because of the cutbacks in staff numbers and the greater freedom given to Criminals within the system

“Board games and bingo”… That’s just an uncivilized way to treat anyone…They don’t even subject detainees at Guantanamo Bay to board games and bingo.

Sure till about 10 years ago, Oberstown was an open campus until they put up a security fence. The Irish penal system focuses too much on rehabilitation. All a career criminal has to do is keep his/hers head down in prison and they’re out in no time. Recently a judge handed a suspended sentence to someone in the hope that one last chance will ‘rehabilitate’ them from a life of crime – they’d 60 previous convictions in the Courts.

To elaborate further on my above point, I recently had the discussion with someone that I could kill someone, plead guilty to manslaughter and be released in around four years time… ‘Prospecting career criminals’ are learning the tricks of the trade in Oberstown. Stop treating them like kids and start treating them like REAL prisoners.

I worked there for several years. Mostly decent staff with the best interests of the young people at heart. It was never designed or suitable for the older teenagers from St Pats to be moved there. Lots of incidents since. Excellent facilities like a step down unit and outreach were also eliminated at the same time.

I think some of you have it all wrong on this one. Its the likes of Obertstown that are a last chance saloon for its older detainies, but especially the younger. Some of these lads can be changed for the good and turned round into hard working members of society. They more than likely have had a troubled upbringing. Proper resources and programes could change these lads for the better. If not they’ll end up entering the adult systems and there chances of change for the better will of near depleted. It is the likes of these lads that should be helped to turn it around. Roll on the red thumbs.

Once a gouger always a gouger. It’s just downhill from there. Those who go to Oberstown have been given numerous chances at large. You can’t save everybody. Just accept that.

Yes Magda im sure your right. The older lads maybe. Don’t forget tho there are kids as young as 10 yrs old. Are you that cruel a person to say that these young lads dont deserve chance. Being that young they more than likely never had what we had growing up. They do deserve a chance and all the resources they need.
