Be sure to tell your elderly family members and children (if they even use the net) to not trust anyone online. Even their friends and family might not be their friends or family.

@Billy Nomates: My Dad’s Gmail was hacked, they emailed his broker to withdraw 30k from his pension using old utility bill & a doctored copy of an old passport (must have been in his emails) as proof of identity. Dad had never requested to withdraw other than the monthly payment they give him both the broker & the bank without a phone call to Dad actioned the transfer to a different bank account… monthly payments go to Ulster Bank they paid it to an AIB account. The fraud only came to light when Dad received a call from the broker the following month asking why he was looking to withdraw and additional 15k. I had to fight both bank &broker, threaten social media (the bank had a fluffy ad campaign at the time) questioning how they could pay out such a sum of money based on an email

@Jen Gordon: Even my untrained eye could see the passport scan they received and signature weren’t right. After me hounding them they finally agreed between the pair of them they would pay it back (they said they would also give a ‘gesture’ for the stress and upset caused… he was 78 at the time and got an awful fright) we didn’t get the gesture but the main thing was we got his pension and lost interest back

@Billy Nomates: Good question. Any normal bank accounts have limits for transfers. E.G. with BOI you have to authenticate each new account you want to xfer money to and this is done by phone or, for amounts as much as that, by letter.

@Billy Nomates: it’s not generally possible. We have a daily limit depending on whether the payee was set up by phone or letter. The scammer would needed to set up a receiver account which it verified by phone. Not sure how this was allowed to happen.

while i dont have any evidence, this appears to follow a similar pattern I’ve observed in recent phone scam attempts, where people are contacted shortly after being in touch with their ISPs. might be worth looking into whether thr ISP customer support lines are being scanned for incoming calls and the caller IDs read out by thurd parties. this would be a major vulnerability (and possible liability) on the ISPs end, as they aren’t sufficiently protecting their customer’s privacy.

@Dave Barrett: i don’t think the call centre agents are to be blamed. I’m thinking more along the lines of call diversion or call catching. there seems to be a targeted approach at people who contacted certain numbers. if they manage to capture those numbers and call them back impersonating the company they just contacted, I’d imagine plenty of people might believe the call to be legit.

Banks could easily incorporate biometric security as a factor of authentication such as finger print reading, facial recognition or by reading your debit or credit card. Why is the regulator on there case? There have been millions of fraud victims since the age of digital banking, including skimming at ATM machine, point of sale devices, phishing. Always making it more convenient….to be robbed.

@BarronVonVaderHam: every bank is required to have 2FA…two stage authentication for new payments. The full details are not given in the story. The second stage is a security token, card reader, or code sent to your phone. Some banks offer finger prints but only if your phone has a fingerprint reader…but not many do, especially older people.

@John Horan: John, my bank does not enforce a stringient authentication flow, my point is it could and many of these crimes would be more preventable. The default is the least secure/ most convenient. The methods used by the attackers are exceptionally trivial , it therefore follows that the security is exceptionally trivial

@BarronVonVaderHam: AIB do, BoI do, PTSB do, EBS do, KBC do, Investec do & Ulsterbank do. In the UK I am only familiar with Natwest/ RBS and HSBC. All of these banks have second stage authentication to set up new payees. The weakest link in all of them is Bank of Ireland who for Premier customers will do it all over the phone, but the relationship manager is familiar with the person . I would be interested to know which bank you are talking about that does not have a second stage authentication? Also in the Republic none of the above banks permit payments of more than 10k per day (with exception of BoI Premier).

The reason email scams work is not because the scammers are crafty, it’s because people are gullible,. The fact he asked her to go into her banking app is a Huge red flag, and most service providers make it clear that you will never be asked X,Y or Z,….so she should have known something was up. Luckily with time these scams won’t be an issue, as this kind of scam today would never or should I say SHOULD never work on the younger generation., As they should be more educated on these things…I do feel bad for this lady though! I hope she gets her money refunded somehow.
