THREE TONNES OF tobacco with a retail value of €2.5million was seized at Dublin Port on Tuesday night, the Revenue has said.

Officers from the Revenue Customs Service at Dublin Port seized the loose tobacco along with officers from the Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

The tobacco was detected coming through Dublin Port having arrived in a shipment from China, the Revenue said, adding that the tobacco was described on the manifest as ‘polyresin crafts’ and was concealed in large polyresin urns.

The potential loss to the Exchequer from the tobacco was estimated at €1.5 million.

National and criminal investigations are ongoing and the operation was part of an ongoing strategy between Revenue and the Gardaí to combat the illegal smuggling of cigarettes and tobacco into Ireland.
