Pancake Day, or Shrove Tuesday, is the traditional feast day before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday. Lent – the 40 days leading up to Easter – was traditionally a time of fasting and on Shrove Tuesday, Anglo-Saxon Christians went to confession and were “shriven” (absolved from their sins). A bell would be rung to call people to confession. This came to be called the “Pancake Bell” and is still rung today.
Shrove Tuesday always falls 47 days before Easter Sunday, so the date varies from year to year and falls between February 3 and March 9. In 2015 Shrove Tuesday will fall on the 17th February.
Shrove Tuesday was the last opportunity to use up eggs and fats before embarking on the Lenten fast and pancakes are the perfect way of using up these ingredients.
A pancake is a thin, flat cake, made of batter and fried in a frying pan. A traditional English pancake is very thin and is served immediately. Golden syrup or lemon juice and caster sugar are the usual toppings for pancakes.
The pancake has a very long history and featured in cookery books as far back as 1439. The tradition of tossing or flipping them is almost as old: “And every man and maide doe take their turne, And tosse their Pancakes up for feare they burne.” (Pasquil’s Palin, 1619).
The ingredients for pancakes can be seen to symbolise four points of significance at this time of year:
    Eggs ~ Creation
Flour ~ The staff of life
    Salt ~ Wholesomeness
    Milk ~ Purity

According to Wikipedia…..Like many other European holidays, the pancake day was originally a pagan holiday. Before the Christian era, the Slavs believed that the change of seasons was a struggle between Jarilo, the god of vegetation, fertility and springtime, and the evil spirits of cold and darkness. People believed that they had to help Jarilo fight against winter and bring in the spring. The most important part of Shrovetide week (the whole celebration of the arrival of spring lasted one week) was making and eating pancakes. The hot, round pancakes symbolized the sun. The Slavs believed that by eating pancakes, they got the power, light and warmth of the sun. The first pancake was usually put on a window for the spirits of the ancestors. On the last day of Shrovetide week some pancakes and other food were burnt in a bonfire as a sacrifice to the pagan gods.

Two kinds of people avoid gluten. Coeliac’s and fad-dieting idiots.

The gluten-free craze is the most moronic fad diet imaginable. You’re avoiding a harmless protein that adds texture to bread. Gluten-free products have to replace that texture with something else, like fat or some kind of processed muck. Most gluten-free foods are higher in fat and sugar than their gluten-inclusive counterparts.

So I’m not coeliac but a bite of bread with gluten in it cause stomach spasms within 10 minutes, joint pain so bad I can’t bend my knees or clench my fists and feel completely hung over with headache shakes and sometimes IBS symptoms. And yes I’ve been tested for coeliac. So please unless you understand what it’s like to be gluten intolerant don’t spout such BS. And yes I’ve done blind testing with my doctor and 100% of the time I have reacted to gluten. It’s not in my head. It’s not fashionable. I hate going to restaurants and getting that look from the server. But it’s people like you with your attitude that compound that misery so Thanks

I always make gluten free and vegan pancakes (about to make some now) and you really couldn’t tell the difference anyway. :) As long as they have plenty of lemon and sugar on them! I normally make a healthier version but it’s Pancake Tuesday… :)

You can insult Valentine’s Day if you want, Tricky, or St Patrick’s Day. If you want to say Easter is crap or Ash Wednesday is a waste of time, feel free.

But don’t you ever slag off a day who’s sole purpose is to let you eat pancakes for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Just don’t you dare.
