Gerry Adams: I don't need to be good at maths

“I’m good at politics,” the Sinn Féin president tells TheJournal.ie

GERRY ADAMS HAS insisted he does not need to be good maths despite ongoing criticism of his and Sinn Féin’s grasp of economic policy.

Amid ridicule from some on the government benches in recent weeks, the Sinn Féin leader has explained to TheJournal.ie today why he doesn’t have to be good at numbers:

Video TheJournal.ie / YouTube

During the wide-ranging interview – which we’ll be publishing over the coming days – Adams also discussed the current situation in Greece.

We asked what he thought of the left-wing Syriza government, which Sinn Féin closely aligns itself to, appearing to row back on some pre-election pledges.

Here’s what the Louth TD had to say:

Doing the math here id say there’s about six people with numerous amounts of twitter accounts spouting the same ol muck that people are not interested in hearing anymore. Finance has changed since the days of Haughey. A leader of a country does not have to be an economical genius as past and present governments have shown us. 35 grand the minimum wage yoiks FG ..PAYING 100% on the unsecured bond yoiks FF. The leader is the statesman that has a vision for the social model of the country economics included. Most decisions made financially come from the department of finance the minister brings the figures to the leader the leader has a cabinet meeting with the other set ministers it is up to the leader to determine what way those figures are used to run the country. DOES ANYONE ACTUALLY BELIEVE THAT THE GREAT LEADERS OF OUR DAY were economical brainiacs computers do most of the number crunching it is how you interpret the numbers and integrate them into policy that makes a government. Now if a brief from Pearse Doherty lands on Gerry Adams table saying we have a surplus how do we spend it is up to the social and economical vision of the leader to see how that surplus is used if he gets a brief that has a deficit it is up to the leader of the country to rectify that by identifying why their is one and now in Irelands case where up to our necks in it because the leader choose to screw over his own people and send the real economy into the abyss. Leaders lead they are the representation of the peoples will. Backslapping and arselicking is now the representation of the spirit of the irish one hundred years on and nothing has changed. We should start believing in what the executed visionaries of 1916 thought we could achieve instead of letting the likes of people who spat at them kill their dream. The Irish people are more than just colonial lapdogs and slaves thats what was said in 1916 and thats what Adams is saying now. #IrishPride try it.

You have a filmed interview and instead of showing it and letting him speak for himself, you get in four digs beforehand.

I don’t think he needs to be good at maths. Fianna Fáil had no moral compass but were human enough to look ashamed. Labour used us to tear down the last government and nearly the entire financial system, yet they look unashamed, arrogant and bandish the knives out against the the same people that elected them, Fine Gael got in on the promise that they were an alternative to the FF dynasty but without the corruption or corruption but instead we got a party that is the same but without the look of shame in their faces.

Sinn Féin to be honest couldn’t be any worse or better than what has been there before. At least Gerry Adams is willing to speak regularly in public; a trait which the current Taoiseach seems unable and unwilling to do. He is on later nd my bet is on Kenny acting like a sociopath tonight and denying all fault of this government and brandishing a mind over matter approach. 2/1 odds on that

That choice of headline, which is what my comment was regarding, is blatantly subjective to be diminishing to Gerry Adams as a politician. It’s taken out of context and used as a stand alone statement in the headline to make him seem incompetent. You’re fully aware of that Hugh. The constant leading questions and general representation of Sinn Fein that you present speak for themselves. I’m not saying you’re a bad journalist Hugh, but when it comes to Sinn Fein you are shockingly biased. And no, I’m not a member of Sinn Fein.

@julian what’s the problem with the choice of headline – i would think that the possible leader of the country to say ‘i don’t need to be good at maths’ would be an eye catching headline – i’m sure if Micheal Martin or Enda Kenny or Joan Burton said it in the same position it would make a headline. I was actually going to criticise the author for being to lenient on the SF support for Greece and about pre-election promises similar to Labour… but then i read your ravings and thought – if we both complain it means its not biased.

Fair enough points and I’m not overly find of Gerry myself but I think SF as a party have, perhaps, something to add to Irish politics as it stands. I don’t like some of the more radical views traditionally held by some in SF but I think it has moved on from there as a party.
I wish that we had more candidates who really saw the big picture, rather than focusing on local issues only. I think what SF could add to government is an impetus to change things. A coalition would perhaps be a favourable outcome.

I for one have no idea who one should vote for the next general election.
Fine Gael being center-right and they’re very bad at it. Poor implementation of taxes, corrupt and unable to listen to the people.
Fianna Fáil, the party that got us into this mess, they are corrupt to the bone and pretend to be center-left when in truth they’re just like Fine Gael, to the right.
Labour, the party that abandoned it’s platform upon going into government with Fine Gael, harsh betrayal of the people also shown to be a bit corrupt as seen with Joan trying to raise salaries (dont quote me on the positions) but I think one was of her aide?
Sinn Féin, the party I would be the closest to supporting but just can’t seem to fully trust. They promise to get rid of water charges, rid of the Property charge at huge expense and their only means of re-gaining that money seems to be the wealth tax.. I agree with them the most, I like their TDs and the fact that they take the average industrial wage.

Tír, the statement “Out of curiosity, why do you believe she was targeted?” seems to imply that her murder is defensible – ie something she did meant the great powers of the IRA council decided she should die.

Forgive me if that is a misinterpretation.

I just don’t think we should go around killing people. It really doesn’t matter what someone claims she did or didn’t do, I don’t think she should have been murdered. Do you?

Anyway, ignoring her murder, we’re back to the defence of IRA gunmen shooting gardai while robbing banks, and his lies about his paedophile brother.

Just because I believe the PIRA campaign was justified, doesn’t mean I have to believe every action they carried out was justified. Likewise, the Old IRA campaign as a whole was justified, but that doesn’t mean I have to believe their disappearing of over 200 (mostly innocent) people was justified. And 200 people disappeared in under 5 years is substantially worse than the 15 killed over 30 years by the Provos.

Leading to me repeating my initial question, again. You have openly accused Gerry Adams of having been involved in Jeam McConville’s death. What evidence do you have of this, and again out of curiosity, why do you believe she was targeted?

I don’t have any idea why jean mcconville was murdered. Why does it matter? Is there a good reason to go around murdering unarmed women?

Let’s imagine that Gerry had nothing to do with it, we’re still left with his defence of bank robbers, murderers of Gardai, and his lies about his convicted paedophile brother.

Again, did I suggest there is a good reason? No, I didn’t. I have already described it as unjustifiable. I am merely asking a question or two. You have openly made a direct and serious allegation that Gerry Adams was involved in her murder. Since you are so knowledgeable, I’m only requesting you explain how you know this, and since you believe you know that to be a fact, to explain your knowledge or opinion on why she was killed?

Again, if you look at your reply – you’ll see – the first sentence you copied. I don’t know why she was killed. I don’t know. I have no idea. I don’t think there’s a good reason to go around shooting people. You don’t think so either, so that’s good.

I’ll accept that Gerry has not been convicted of anything to do with her murder.

Now that we’ve gotten over that – What about his defence of bank robbers, murderers of Gardai, and his lies about his paedophile brother?

But we haven’t gotten over it. You stated that he was involved. You can’t change that simply by accepting he hasn’t been charged. I’m interested to know what evidence you have to back up your assertion that he was involved. As for why, well, I don’t doubt that you don’t know. I’d be slightly surprised if you didn’t have an opinion though, considering you have put it on record your supposed knowledge of who was involved.

P.s. Interesting to see, yet again, a free stater shouting the names of the only two victims of the conflict that matter south of the border. I wonder, if you didn’t have google to resort to, could you name two or three victims of the british army/loyalist gangs quite as quickly. Mind you, I’d find your pretence to care about Garda McCabe slightly more believable if you knew how to spell his name. Jerry, not Gerry.

    Here’s an excerpt.

Besides having captured the basic drama of capitalist dynamics, Marx has given me the tools with which to become immune to the toxic propaganda of neoliberalism. For example, the idea that wealth is privately produced and then appropriated by a quasi-illegitimate state, through taxation, is easy to succumb to if one has not been exposed first to Marx’s poignant argument that precisely the opposite applies: wealth is collectively produced and then privately appropriated through social relations of production and property rights that rely, for their reproduction, almost exclusively on false consciousness.

Imagine trying to explain the benefits of WF to Jackie Healy Ray? SF are the only party that has a policy of banning a major health measure that most suits their voters and their children. Would he, yet again, be polling as the most popular leader in the country? Would he have overseen his party over treble it’s representation in the Dáil in the space of one election?
