Joan Burton: I sometimes wonder if TDs criticising JobBridge have ever worked in a job*

* “Apart from politics of course,” the Tánaiste said.

JOAN BURTON HAS mounted another strong defence of the controversial JobBridge scheme, questioning whether its critics have ever even had a job outside of politics.

The Tánaiste and Social Protection Minister was responding to the National Youth Council of Ireland survey which found, among other things, that 44% thought the scheme was used for free labour.

JobBridge is aimed at those who have been getting a jobseeker’s payment for at least three months. Participants in the scheme get an extra €50 per week on top of their social welfare payment.

On foot of the NYCI survey, Socialist TD and founder of scambridge.ie Paul Murphy said the finding that 100 per cent of participants who felt compelled onto the scheme “because of threats to their welfare payment” were dissatisfied with it “shatters” a key plank of the government’s approach to job creation.

But Burton insisted there was no compulsion for people to get involved in the scheme, describing it as a “structured programme of interviewing people, calling people back in” and adding: “The really positive thing is that so many people want to be involved”.

Paul Murphy is Freed Paul Murphy Sasko Lazarov / Photocall Ireland Sasko Lazarov / Photocall Ireland / Photocall Ireland

She continued:

You know, I hear people in the Dáil talking about JobBridge and I sometimes wonder have some of them ever worked in a job – other than politics of course – because there’s actually no way that I can say to any of you people here that ‘I’m sending Mr A, B or C or Ms A, B, or C to work with you, they must work with you. They’ve no choice in the matter, you’ve no choice in the matter.’”

In a further political attack, she noted that Sinn Féin’s Gerry Adams – “on his day off from his trampoline” – sought the extension of the scheme.

Burton added: “Are there people who don’t get a job out of it? Yes there are and obviously we have to work even more intensely and I welcome all the studies that are done into JobBridge.

“It’s like any other job. [With] some people, the thing they learn is ‘this one’s not for me’ and they move on to something else.”

Read: Should the JobBridge top-up be doubled to €100 a week?

Experiences: ‘If it wasn’t for JobBridge, I’d still be on benefits’

Brilliant. But seriously it’s WW – Wild Way short for Wild Atlantic Way.
They don’t get it themselves down there because there is no W in Irish.
Tourists know. Hungarians don’t know, no W either.

The Wild Atlantic Way winds its way along the coastline of Ireland through its green valleys and wild coastline. The zig zag lines indicate a constantly changing direction. In the case of Kerry, following the coastline along the west of Ireland and the Atlantic sea.
Borrowed from the original usage for North Atlantic Tracks (NAT) are trans-Atlantic routes that stretch from the northeast of North America to western Europe across the Atlantic Ocean. They ensure aircraft are separated over the ocean, where there is little radar coverage. These heavily-traveled routes are used by aircraft traveling between North America and Europe, flying between the altitudes of 29,000 and 41,000 feet inclusive. Entrance and movement along these tracks is controlled by special Oceanic Center air traffic controllers to maintain separation between airplanes. The primary purpose of these routes is to provide a Minimum Time Route (MTR). They are aligned in such a way as to minimize any head winds and maximize tail winds impact on the aircraft. This results in much more efficiency by reducing fuel burn and flight time. To make such efficiencies possible, the routes are created daily to take account of the shifting of the winds aloft.

Its a wild atlantic way sign S-for the road to Dingle, and N-for the road towards Banna and Ballyheigue. Thats all i know despite there being a workshop for it in the lecture hall beside me in college….

Asked lots of people in Kerry this summer and no one knew. They’re at waterways but hadn’t seen any marking the Atlantic tho. Haven’t read any of the links posted yet. They might be enlightening

Is it for The route for The Ring of Kerry? Going straight brings you on the route in one direction… Going right brings you on the route to go in the opposite direction?
