London is getting a new bridge and some of the designs are amazing

One looks like a rocket ship.

THE LONDON BOROUGH of Wandsworth wants to build a bridge going across the Thames.

The bridge will link the Nine Elms area on the south to Pimlico on the north.

The competition brief says that it has “the potential to become one of the most expressive and visible landmarks in London” and will link the urban north shore with an almost entirely newly built south side.

The organisers want a bridge that is “inspiring, elegant and functional in its design and perfect in its execution”. It has a budget of around £40 million.

To actually build the bridge, the borough is holding an open design competition and some of the entries are spectacular:

This really shows how much we get burned in Ireland for public projects. The Samuel Beckett bridge cost €60 million yet look at what they will get in London for £40 million, bearing in mind the Thames is way wider than the Liffey.

Those are competition entries a bit like the texaco children’s art competition. They have to prove that they can be built for £40million. Which undoubtedly some of them can’t.

I don’t know whether this will go to the right person because its on mobile.

But comparing the cost of Beckett in Dublin to London is crazy.
    1. Our bridge opens and shuts.
    2. Competitions are often costed cheaper with more emphasis on the sale than the structural or economic viability of the scheme. Any one of these could cost 2-3 times more

Also Spiderman, is the Samuel Beckett bridge open to traffic? It looks like this one will only be pedestrian and bikes. That I would imagine would have a huge impact on the cost.

But the Thames is a much wider river in the heart of London which means buying land at either end which would be cheap.

With a £40 million budget some of those designs would be lucky to be half built before the cash ran out.

I like the first, third, fifth and sixth bridges. They’re modern, but not enough to make them look out of place. I especially love the water flowing out of the side of the fifth one, it’s something that I don’t think has been done before. It’s unique
