Brrr. Wrap up warm - it's another cold and icy start to the day

There are two weather warnings in place.

IF YOU’RE HOPING for an end to the cold snap this week, we have to be the bearers of bad news – today is going to be another chilly one.

That snow Met Éireann warned about has fallen over parts of the country.

As if you needed proof…

Today, it warns that it will be a cold and icy start to the day, with further wintry showers.

The snow showers “will be heaviest and most frequent in northern and western areas, with scattered thunderstorms”.

Top temperatures will reach 4 – 7c.

Tonight, it will be cold again, with clear spells and some showers. The lowest temperatures will be -1 to +2c, meaning that we can expect some frost and icy patches.

There’s still a Status Orange national warning in effect with a snow-ice warning for Connacht, Cavan, Monaghan, Donegal, Kildare, Laois, Longford, Offaly, Westmeath and Meath.

It’s in place until 6pm today.

A status yellow snow-ice warning for Munster, Dublin, Carlow, Kilkenny, Louth, Wexford and Wicklow is in place until 6pm tonight also.

Traffic woes

As you can see  from the photos above, some roads are having issues due to the bad weather.

One Twitter user is reporting that the road has been closed between Nenagh and Moneygall:

AA Roadwatch is reporting that it’s taking around 1 hour 45 minutes to travel south on the M50 from the M1/M50 interchange to Junction 13 Ballinteer.

In Cork, there is black ice on Airport Hill, so caution is needed.

In addition, Irish Rail is reporting that some of its services are operating with delays of an hour or more:

As a country, we collectively need to grow a pair. Bit of frost and a dusting of snow, no doubt our severe weather is headline news worldwide!!

@ProudishIrishRepublican This article is what was traditionally as a “weather forecast” or “weather report”. It doesn’t mean we’re all freaking out or going nuts. Nobody’s claiming that the world’s about to end.. It’s just information that we use, in all walks of life,, to plan our day and avoid weather-related problems.

@Neal: weather warnings my ar$e, a bit of frost and there’s an orange warning!! Just saying we over exaggerate where weather is concerned. We seem to have a fixation on weather. It’s Ireland FFS! Cold and wet. Tell me something I don’t know!
