Two Australian drug smugglers are to be executed by firing squad

Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran, the ringleaders of the so-called “Bali Nine” drug smuggling gang, were woken and given a few minutes to get ready.

TWO AUSTRALIAN DRUG smugglers in Indonesia were transferred today to an island where they will be executed, as the Australian leader said his country was “revolted” by their looming deaths after frantic diplomatic efforts to save them.

Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran, the ringleaders of the so-called “Bali Nine” drug smuggling gang, were woken and given a few minutes to get ready before leaving Bali’s Kerobokan jail in the early hours, said local justice ministry official Nyoman Putra Surya.

The men, sentenced to death in 2006 for trying to smuggle heroin out of Indonesia, said “thank you” before leaving, and “we handcuffed them and they were quiet”, he added.

About 200 police, 50 soldiers and a water cannon were stationed outside the Bali prison as the men, in their early 30s, were driven out.

The pair were flown to Cilacap, on Java island, on a chartered commercial flight accompanied by military aircraft.

Two armoured vehicles escorted by elite police then boarded a boat at the local port which crossed to Nusakambangan island, home to several high security prisons and where the pair will be executed, an AFP reporter at the scene said.

Attorney-General Muhammad Prasetyo said Wednesday that final preparations, such as training the firing squads, were still being made before a date could be set for execution of the Australians and several other drugs offenders.

Authorities must give convicts 72 hours notice before they are executed. Convicts from France, Brazil, the Philippines, Nigeria and Ghana also recently lost appeals for clemency, and speculation is mounting over whether they will be included in the next round of executions.

‘Sick in their guts’

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott, who has repeatedly called for Jakarta not to go ahead with the executions, said Australians were sickened by the developments.

“We frankly are revolted by the prospect of these executions,” he said, adding that “right now millions of Australians are feeling sick in their guts”.

Abbott said he hoped there might be a “change of heart in Indonesia”, but added: “What I don’t want, though, is to hold out false hope.”

However, he added: “I hope that even at this late hour, the better angels of the Indonesian peoples’ nature will reassert themselves”.

But, where is the proof? Is it no longer needed? Surely they can analyze the nerve gas agent and find out where it came from. Surely they can wait that long before placing blame. Though Russia is the most likely suspect, they could just as easily be framed.

@Andy K: So Russia is the likely suspect even though they had the opportunity to kill him for four years(he was in a Russian prison) then another 8 years(since the exchange date) but naw, they are gonna do it so close to the presidential elections. Its quite suspicious that Britain had done it, firstly as I mentioned they don’t want Putin in power (create a scandal) or because of the world cup(the English were fiercely against it being held in Russia)

@Andy K: Russia developed the nerve gas during ww2. The Russian military are the only ones with it. How much proof do you want?. They invaded Iraq and completely destabilised the country with no proof whatsoever. Here is Russia with alarming proof that they instigated a chemical weapons attack on English soil and not a mention of being terrorists. Seems like on rule for Countrys in the Middle east and a different rule for Countrys that have large financial assets in London.

@Andy K: UK chemical experts say that a military grade nerve agent was used to attack a Russian citizen in the UK. The UK themselves are forbidden by international agreement from producing military grade nerve agents. The only people who would be interested in killing a Russian double agent would be….um…Russians. They were given time to respond. They didn’t. Logical deduction is then applied.

@Mark Pa: ah never mind they ‘could have killed him’ before nonsense – the line that was crossed is using chemicals / nerve agents / poisons that endanger the public and in this case an innocent police officer too – stop with the rubbish theories – they know where these ‘agents’ are made and they have a lot more surveillance and information than they can share publicly – the dark arts and world of espionage is brutal on all sides but the indiscriminate way the public are being exposed to danger is the real significant issue here – dont pay too much attention to all the spin and lies about spy agencies as most of it is intentionally inaccurate— on all sides.

@Andy K: It has been analysed by UK scientists, the UK government are in contact with the OPCW in Holland according to the UK ambassador to the UN, as stated at the Security Council emergency meeting yesterday. There is no reason for the evidence garnered by the authorities to release their findings yet to the public domain whilst the criminal investigation continues. If the OPCW confirm what the UK scientists have discovered, there will probably be much greater repercussions around the world. Provided of course an alternative source to Europe’s gas demands can be met outside Gazprom.

Either Russia wanted people to know it was them or someone framed them. Either option is completely viable. Dismissing one as a mad conspiracy without proof is stupidity. Military tactics are all about stealth and diversion.

Would it be that they knew from the symptoms that a nerve agent was used but needed time to analyse its chemical makeup of the agent to figure out what type?
And the easiest to ID and dismiss would be those that would have been well known in the West such as Sarin or VX. And Russia even today denies the existence of the Novichok range of nerve agents despite evidence from the man who helped invent them. So they had to which of the new exotics it was.

What advantage is it for Russia to get rid of this guy, and yes I agree if they wanted him gone he would be?

Secondly it is plausible that this was carried out to by a third party to create tension between uk and Russia.
Russian investors are scoping up any opportunities they wish in the uk and ultimately the profits are coming back into the Russian economy

@neilo: yeah Neilo, the Brits story is much more plausible. Even on the BBC website the pair did not slump on the bench until 3.45pm. But magically, the whole press had congregated to report on nerve agent use in less than 2 hours. Pull the other one, it has bells on it.

@Cal Mooney:When the pair were brought to the hospital they would have been checked by the doctors for a drug overdose. That would have been ruled out very quickly. As their were two victims with the same symptoms a stroke would have been also ruled out immediately. So the logical conclusion would have been something toxic entered their system. So they would have noted their symptoms and checked the medical database for similar symptoms for poisons and would have found that hey they have the symptoms of being exposed to some form of Chemical Nerve Agent. And it wasn’t for nearly a week after the diagnoses that what type of Nerve Agent was used. So your attempt at conspiracy simply doesnt fly. As for the press. Doctors have phones too.

in relation to Q2, I am not necessarily saying that the UK did this either. However, while Russia is not entirely innocent in its affairs, NATO countries definitely want to restrict what Russia is doing and they want any excuse to impose more sanctions, boycott the world cup, etc

There is just not enough evidence to point the finger at anyone yet and start imposing sanctions on a certain country.

But at least they didn’t deny that it was British troops who shot them, or even the fact that British troops were present that day. Putin on the other hand put thousands of armed Russian troops in Crimea and then denied they were Russian troops.

Seems like we’re been guided through this propaganda path and our media is happy to go along. The US needs an excuse to invade Syria and oust Assad, they’re sore losers and happy to prolong the killing until they get their oil. They need an excuse though. Set up a nerve agent attack with the UK. Start sending out press releases with a warning that the nasty Russians could strike anywhere. Stage another chemical attack with their terrorist buddies, no evidence it’s the Russians, but we’ve been brainwashed to believe it’s probably them, as usual though, devoid of any evidence. Happy days! Invade Syria to liberate the poor population, ban gas imports of Russian gas into Europe so they can get a monopoly on their liquified gas and millions of dead people later the US get to keep their hegemonic grip on the global energy industry!

@Michael Farrelly: of course everyone who openly questions what is actually going on is a Russian bot!!

Seems to be a few NATO bots as well by the looks of it

@gjpb: there are plenty. How can anyone agree with the dictator Putin ? He has illegally invaded Crimea, invaded Europe, and put his electoral opposition in jail. Even Hitler didn’t do that

@Michael Farrelly: well that can be easily fixed a number of ways 1) subscription accounts, 2) allow only account using real identities that can be verified, or 3) close down the comments section and let the bots lose their audience (less fun for the rest of us laughing at them though).

Remember the UK and Us have illegally invaded countries and have committed many questionable acts too..

The Yanks invaded Iraq on the premise of WMDs. Nerve agents are WMDs. Any sign of the Yanks invading Russia because of this attack?

But the reason the yanks won’t invade Russia is because it would be suicide.

@EC P Ford: Why should we? what have they done against Ireland to justify such action (suspicion of ‘bots and generally not being nice – are not sufficient grounds). I’m no fan of Russia or their bully-boy tactics, but we need to keep perspective, especially if the russians are losing all sense of theirs.

There are some very simple folk here who seem to think that attacking Russia would be like invading Iraq.

There is a reason why Saddam got hysterical threatening the “Mother of all Wars” while Mr Putin merely smirks.

‘Cos Russia really does have WMDs!

Confiscation of Russian oligarchs money. Yup. That is the plan, an idea Theresa got from her Saudi friends. They executed similar plan just a while ago. Confiscation of all assets of oligarchs who did not donate to her party. They surely must be evil.
While she will be at it let us send Leo to Londonistan to ask for some of that money as compensation for what evil Russians have done to us just last month. We all remember Beast from the East which paralysed the whole country for 2 days with heaps of snow and toppled Lidl stores. That was clandestine operation directed by Russian arctic command, abhorring stealth attack surpassing effectiveness of every nerve agent known to humans.

Theresa wanted to say that they seize assets of Russian oligarchs who did not donate to her party previously as they clearly must be some evil people with sinister thoughts.
Any Russian people who donated to Conservative party are exempt from this clampdown on evil people assets.

It’s only a few years since Israel murdered a man in a third country (They’ve done it more than once).
But on this occasion they (ab)used an Irish passport as part of the murder plot.
Barely a squeak from the Dublin government, and not a word from all the EU governments that are now vomiting out hatred.
And the Israeli Ambassador in Dublin was not even asked to go away for a week!
