Police detain a man near the site of looting in an electronics store near New St Station, Birmingham, last night David Jones/PA Wire

First people jailed in connection with UK riots

One man had been arrested on suspicion of murder in Birmingham. One thousand people have now been arrested across the UK.

TWO MEN HAVE been jailed for public order offences in relation to the disturbances in the UK over the past few days.

The Greater Manchester Police have  called the sentences “swift justice” and said that it was the “first of many”. The men were sentenced to 10 weeks and 16 weeks in jail. The police have also said that extra court sittings will continue tonight to deal with prisoners. They have also said that anyone convicted of a criminal offence following the disorder will be named.

Earlier the Greater Manchester Police moved to quell rumours that violence had broken out again today in the Manchester area:

A man has been arrested in Manchester on suspicion of arson in connection to a fire in a Miss Selfridge store in Manchester yesterday evening.

Shops in Birmingham have closed early today, while police continue patrols around the city. Birmingham police have also issued photos of suspects involved in incidents of looting and violence and have appealed for people to aid them in identifying those suspects.

The Guardian reports that more than a thousand people have now been arrested after courts sat through the night last night. Earlier the Prime Minister David Cameron said that he expected everyone convicted in relation to the disturbances to go to prison.

BBC reports that an 11-year-old boy was among those in court today. He admitted taking a wastepaper basket from a Debenhams in Romford.

One man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after three men were killed when a car was driven into them in the Dudley Road area of Birmingham. Police in the area have appealed for calm and have asked people to trust that they can protect them. The Telegraph reports that witnesses have said that the men “died doing the job of the police”.

Meanwhile the PSNI has confirmed to TheJournal.ie that it doesn’t believe that minor disturbances in the Craigavon area this evening are in any way connected to events in the UK over the past few days.

Motorists have been advised to expect delays in the area. The PSNI said that these are minor incidences which they have experienced before.

Can’t afford to incarcerate that many people all of a sudden…it’s financially unsustainable…cost alot to keep prisoners alive!

All you have to do is use an old army base and throw the lot of them in there. Use the money that they claim on benefits to pay for it keep costs to a minimum. Feed them basic daily intake every day, no TV, menial jobs and get a few army PT drill instructer’s to run them into the ground each day. Four months of that and the might not be so keen to run riot the next time.

Not a bad idea, put them on a chain gang and send them back into their own areas so that their friends and neighbours can see them in all their shame. It would also give people a chance to get a good look at them so that if they ever cause trouble again the can be identified straight away.

From what I heard they were only charged with minor offences. It’s only to get them into court. I presume more serious charges like rioting etc will come when things calm down and all the evidence is collected.
