The HTV-2 can withstand temperatures of over 2,000°C when re-entering the atmosphere.

US military to trial world's fastest-ever plane

The Falcon HTV-2, which will be launched at 3pm Irish time, can travel at 13,000mph – that’s Dublin to NYC in 14m 42sec.

THE US MILITARY will this afternoon hold a test flight for the fastest plane ever to grace the skies.

The Falcon HTV-2, which has a maximum speed of over 13,000 mph - will begin a trial flight at 3pm Irish time.

The unmanned craft started life as a military research project, which sought to come up with an aircraft that could deliver a bomb to anywhere in the world within an hour.

An inaugural test flight was held in April 2010, with the HTV-2 glider flying 4,800 miles at twenty times the speed of sound. The flight had ended  prematurely when the on-board autopilot detected undesirable behaviour, but the plane landed itself safely.

The craft is launched by rocket in a capsule, before it ‘hatches’ and launches from near-earth orbit.

Because of its high altitude, the launch will not be shown online, but live data will be posted to Twitter by @darpa_news.

More info on its flight can be found at the DARPA military website.

@Darren Byrne: If they really want something and you really want to get it for them then get it for them.

But it’s ok to say ‘no’, if you feel under pressure or money is tight. Yes the kid, regardless, will be upset, but that’s life.

It’s the very reason why I didn’t go to the WWF (wrestling) when it came to Dublin.

“Mam can I go to the WWF when it comes to Dublin”

    - ‘No’.

And I went about my day. No tantrums, no skulking.

All stemmed from when I wanted 3 items from the poundshop, but was told I could have 1. But I wanted 3. I left with none. A tantrum, and no dinner that evening.

I found out years later that there wasn’t any money for even 1 toy, and I wasn’t getting dinner anyway as there wasn’t enough money to buy food.

But the parents didn’t miss a trick and saw an opportunity to teach me a life lesson.

    Harsh, but fair.

@Darren Byrne: That’s honestly something that I didn’t consider. I’d hope exceptions could be made in some circumstances. To be clear, I’m not really in support of forcing people through gift shops, it is a greedy move on the part of management. I’m just making the point that parents should be able to say no to their kids.

@Tommy: Hmm – well for sure Zoos shouldn’t exist. Literally no need for them and it’s cruel for sure. But…

That’s the thing, isn’t it? People say the animals don’t want to be there. They don’t even know they shouldn’t be there. That’s the problem. You’ve got a gorilla sitting there thinking Dublin Zoo is just how life works. He’s never woken up and thought, ‘Hang on, shouldn’t I be swinging about in some jungle eating a banana instead of getting stared at by Deco with a pram?’ They haven’t got a clue they’re not supposed to be there, because we plonked them behind a fence and went, There you go, pal, this is your life now. If you kidnapped me as a baby and kept me in a shed, I’d probably think that’s normal too. Doesn’t mean it’s right. Just means I wouldn’t know any better. And that’s the problem, animals shouldn’t be caged, they shouldn’t be spectacles.

Zoos are crap. I agree with you there.
