Trailer watch: Which movie should you go see this weekend?

What’s a must-watch, and what’s a miss? We tell you.

THE WEEKEND IS coming up, and that means new movies for you to see. But which is a must-watch, and are there any you should avoid?

We take a look.

Insurgent

The Divergent Series / YouTube

What we know

It’s the second in the Divergent series, and main characters Tris and Four are on the run.

What the critics say

  • “It’s wandering, not urgent, while indicating that all-Shailene-all-the-time can be too much of a pretty good thing.” – TIME
  • “There’s no question that the feature is a leaner, meaner affair than its predecessor. That’s not enough, though, to counterbalance the often oppressive self-seriousness” – The Hollywood Reporter

The Gunman

MOVIECLIPS Trailers / YouTube

What we know

Sean Penn plays an international spy who is fighting to clear his name. Based on the novel The Prone Gunman.

What the critics say

  • “The Gunman is too disorganised and sloppy to make sense as political commentary or to work on the most basic level as a globe-trotting chase thriller.” - AV Club
  • “It was impossible to care about any of these three characters” – JoBlo.com

The Voices

Movie Trailers / YouTube

What we know

Ryan Reynolds plays a young guy who hears his pets talking to him… and obeys them, with deadly consequences. It’s all due to his complex psychological state.

What the critics say

  • “a kind of twisted mix of romance and psychodrama… a highly unusual role for Reynolds” – Den of Geek
  • “Satrapi is exploring the dark underbelly and murderous intent of even the most cheerful, seemingly happy people in society.” – RogerEbert.com

Sean Penn trying to stay relevant by going the Liam Neeson route. To be fair though, give him a good script with a good director and he’s brilliant like with “Carlito’s Way”. It’s a shame movies like that are rare in Hollywood these days.

Voices looks weird. For someone with mental health issues its the one to make me feel normal. You gotta laugh at your own madness.

Same. Films that are even weirder than you make you feel better almost. More comfortable.
