Unless you are lit up like a Christmas tree cyclists are hard to see. Dressing all in black with one or two lights is not safety first it’s fashion first.

Couldn’t agree more. A cyclist collided with my drivers door I had just opened recently. She was more concerned for her new bike than herself. Thankfully she was not hurt. When I explained to her the reason I did not see her in my mirror before I opened the door was that she blended in well to the black sky, as she was wearing black from head to foot. And the tiny pin light on the handlebars was as powerful a birthday candle. No damage to body, door or bike, thankfully. Just pride.

Hope the cyclist makes a full recovery, this is really unfortunate to hear.

Leopardstown Road goes from the N11 all the way up to the M50 junction. The cycle lane is a prime example of what’s bad about cycle lanes, it’s in a mess most of the way and dips up and down thru gateways which is not good for cyclists.

The only option is to cycle on the road which is also in a mess and has 2 tightly squeezed lanes filled with cars that drive too fast. Gardai regularly out with speed guns on this road but doesn’t show people down.

There’s no cycle lane either coming from the m50 bridge
to the luas bridge. Could happen easily to any cyclist here. Thoughts are with him

And there’s roadworks there at the moment at the entrance to the racecourse, what’s needed for such a busy road that goes to an industrial estate is a proper bike track that’s independent of the main road. But unfortunately our local property tax and road tax goes to a private company called Irish water. Still want to pay?

I hate to see news like this, wish him a full and speedy recovery, the motorist is king in Ireland, always will be which is a shame as cycling is not just a great way to get fit but also to enjoy life and your surroundings

Leopardstown road cycle lanes are a disgrace. Impossible to use them as they’re like a rolls coaster. I really hope this poor guy recovers. Too many cyclists getting injured.

Cycling in Ireland is almost an adventure sport. Even walking is dangerous in some places that have no sidewalks or street lighting. You can’t blame only the motorists. If they have only one lane they can’t even swerve away in time.

A motorist shouldn’t have to swerve. If there is no footpath for pedestrians then you drive to the appropriate speed along with using your lights should be sufficient to avoid a collision.

Shawn, I know that’s how it’s done in Ireland. But even if you’re driving very slowly, imagine it’s raining & you’re going through a bend and you suddenly notice someone with dark clothes with no reflectors walking only after coming closer… it’s dangerous. It’s a shame people are expected to get used to it rather than widening the roads to create space for pedestrians.

-A cyclist should never cycle on a rad like that especially at night.
    - get you get on your bike anywhere in Ireland you are putting your life at risk.
    - minimise the risk. Go to the footpath, walk with your bike on the grass verge if the road is too dangerous.
    - simple as.
