Man who raped and killed Jill Meagher convicted of three more rapes

One was just two months before Meagher was killed.

ADRIAN ERNEST BAYLEY, the Australian man convicted of raping and killing Irish woman Jill Meagher in Melbourne in 2012, has been convicted of three further rapes.

Two of the three victims, a Dutch backpacker and a prostitute, were raped in 2012, just months before Jill was murdered.

Bayley was on parole at the time he raped and killed the Drogheda native close to her home in the Australian city.

Bayley has now been found guilty of the rape of 10 women and is serving a minimum of 35 years in prison.

A court in Melbourne heard that the 43-year-old raped an 18-year-old prostitute in his car in 2000, before raping another sex worker in 2012.

He raped a Dutch backpacker on her way home from a night out in July of that year, two months before killing Jill Meagher.

He had contested the charges, but was found guilty in each case.

ABC News in Australia quotes a Meagher family statement as being critical of the parole board.

Jill’s father, George McKeon said while nothing can bring back their daughter, it was clear the Victorian Parole Board “failed to protect their daughter and many others in the community.”

“As a family, we have until now been very mindful not to make any statement or take any actions that might delay the outstanding criminal proceedings against Jillian’s murderer.

“However now that these proceedings are completed we want to try and obtain closure to ensure that other families don’t have to endure this trauma.”

It is a tragedy that Bayley was given parole and was thus able to offend again.
It is also a tragedy that the male journalist and editorial staff of this newspaper discounts the other victims as “a backpacker and a prostitute” while intimately referring to Ms Meagher as “Jill”.
The other victims of this offender were daughters, sisters & friends – their occupation deserves no stigma nor does the media need to present rape or murder as “occupational hazards” when the victims are sex workers, reserving outrage for when a “good girl” is hurt.
I can’t imaging the horror Tom Meagher has experienced – horror similarly felt by the survivors and families of the other victims.

Maybe the other victims didn’t waive their right to anonymity. A lot of victims of sexual assault prefer to keep their names out of the papers.

It’s appears that the other victims’ names have not been released, only a small amount of identifying detail is known. It’s like this across many media stories this morning, so let’s not jump to conclusions about the “male journalist” and his intentions.

    Hi Mama,

As others have pointed out, the identity of the other victims has not been released, as per their own wishes.

My gender has nothing to do with the decision not to name them and the editorial staff of this website are all female.

Still doesn’t excuse using their occupation or past time. I.e. Sexworker, backpacker. Why not just say ’2 other women/ladies’. What a person (male or female) does or does not do, shouldn’t ever be an excuse or reason for rape. No human deserves that.

You mean too lenient for a man who rapes 10 women – should be 100 years at least – man should never see the light of day again. I’d even put him into solitary confinement… no rehabilitation possible so make his life as uncomfortable as possible.

No Gabbi Johnson, he is hopefully with the general prison population getting hell. Apparently, he is getting hell from the other prisoners as he has been complaining about it, despite being in isolation. 35yrs of a living hell, is too good for him, shame he is in isolation though.

I heard on radio here that he was jailed for 8 rapes and one attempted murder and a parole board saw fit to let him out just because he completed some 6 week mickey mouse rehab course and because he had a good behaviour record…. in an all male prison! whoever made that decision really should be held accountable.
