Investigation after two men badly burned by molten plastic

The pair are currently receiving treatment at Cork University Hospital.

THE HEALTH AND Safety Authority has launched an investigation after two men in their 40s were airlifted to hospital after receiving burns from molten plastic.

It’s understood that both men were working at a machine when the incident, which has been described as an explosion, occurred.

It happened at Thormac Engineering in the Shannon Industrial Estate at around 3.15pm yesterday afternoon.

It’s reported that the men, aged 44 and 49,  suffered severe burns to their hands and heads.

The men were taken by ambulance to the Irish Coast Guard base at Shannon Airport and from there they were airlifted to Cork University Hospital.

Thormac has been based in Shannon for over 35 years.  The custom plastics manufacturer company has also begun a full investigation process.

A company director has said their thoughts are with the men and their families.

Burns by plastic or any molten material are particularly bad as the material bonds to the skin and tissue. Very painful thing..best of luck to both of them.

That’s a nasty injury…….good thinking by whoever made the decision to bring them straight to Rescue 115s base and fly them straight to CUH.

Let’s hope they make a good recovery.
