Want to get active this weekend? Here are some top hiking and biking trails

Unleash your inner hiker.

MOST PEOPLE are lucky enough to have a long weekend off work for Easter, so we’ve rounded up a few suggestions for those looking to explore the great outdoors.

Coillte has mapped out forest parks and recreational sites all the family can enjoy in locations across the country.

The organisation runs 12 forest parks – covering Donegal, Cavan, Monaghan, Roscommon, Galway, Kildare, Wicklow, Limerick and Cork.

Coillte also has five flagship mountain bike trail centres:

  • Ballinastloe, Co Wicklow
  • Ballyhoura, Co Limerick
  • Derroura and Portumna Forest Park, both in Co Galway
  • Ticknock Mountain Bike Trails, Co Dublin

Daithi de Forge, Recreation Manager at Coillte said there is something out there for everyone “whether you’re a gentle rambler, a seasoned hiker, or a mountain biker”.

So this Easter we are encouraging the public to cast away the cobwebs, to visit their local forest and put that spring in their step.

About 18 million people visit Coillte forests every year.

Pilgrim Paths

Last Easter Saturday 1,800 people took part in National Pilgrim Paths Day, walking or cycling 11 medieval routes throughout Ireland.

The second annual event will take place tomorrow – with 10 counties getting involved.

Some 13 walks are planned over the weekend – most are one-day events but some will take place on Saturday and Sunday.

John O’Dwyer, chairman of Pilgrim Paths Ireland, said the “support” the organisation received last year was “overwhelming”.

“Over 1,800 people walked or cycled the pathways of Ireland’s ancient pilgrim paths.

This year we invite people to once again escape from the daily treadmill of living and take some time out to reflect on life while experiencing the joy of exploring the hidden places of peace and beauty.

Won’t be on any of these trails myself, but that weather is grand for moseying out on the bike, or for a walk or run. These pop up races are fairly popular now too, so I’ll be off to do those for the summer. Shur aren’t these long evenings only grand for it!

Nice to list all these out before a good break. Love mountain biking.

I really hope more trails are constructed throughout Ireland. Not enough people take our beautiful country side for granted.

    Totally agree James.
There is phenomonal untapped potential in Ireland for Mountain Biking. Mountain Biking is a massive sport in the UK, and really is the “new golf” over there, and that really is no exaggeration.

Biking can be to Ireland what Skiing is to other countries, but we are a good 10 years behind right now.

If you’re going to Ballinastoe don’t be a kn0b and park blocking my gate. There’s loads of parking at the chap who runs it house without blocking everyone elses gate.

Ireland hasn’t got mountains, it has hills. I’ve climbed the tallest peaks in most of the US states, that’s a real challenge! It’s such a wonderful feeling knowing that you’ve conquered nature and have made it your own. The self satisfaction is immense. Always have to laugh at the four peaks challenge here. It’s like walking down to the shop for anyone who’s really into fitness.

Darren, a mountain is a mountain and a hill is a hill. Ireland has plenty of both but you are being too ignorant about the subject.

I always recommend Donadea Forest for a day out, lovely coffee shop with wheelchair and buggy friendly walks. Lots of space for the kids to wear themselves out at too. Nothing beats a bit of fresh air.

Single-speed (SS) mountain bikes have one set gear ratio. The gear ratio chosen depends on the terrain being ridden, the strength and skill of the rider, and the size of the bike (a bike with 29″ wheels often requires a different gearing than a bike with standard 26″ wheels). Often single-speeds are fully rigid, steel-framed bikes. These are typically ridden by very fit individuals on mild to moderate cross country terrain. Best Mountain Bike Under : $500
