Amy Winehouse documentary sheds new light on the tragic singer's life

It’s made by the team behind Senna.

Altitude Film / YouTube

SHE WAS JUST 27 when she died in 2011, but during her short life British singer Amy Winehouse made quite an impact.

Her tragic death from alcohol poisoning came after some years of unrest for the Londoner, who struggled with alcohol addiction, drug use, and a difficult relationship with husband Blake Fielder-Civil.

A life unravelling

An incredibly talented soul singer, she released two albums before her death, Frank and Back to Black, scooping up a heap of Grammy, Brit and Ivor Novello awards.

But as her fame grew, her personal life began to disintegrate – and it happened right in front of the paparazzi that followed her every move.

It happened, too, in front of the very audiences who paid to watch her perform, when numerous live gigs crumbled into alcohol-induced shambles.

Now, a new documentary aims to shed new light on Winehouse’s life. It’s directed by Asif Kapadia, who also directed the award-winning documentary Senna, about Ayrton Senna.

The film, which is due out in cinemas in Ireland on 3 July, features home footage of a teenage Amy, as well as interviews with the people closest to her, like her parents and husband.

Back in 2013, Variety reported that Kapadia was about to start work on the documentary. Asif told the publication that Amy was “a once-in-a-generation talent” who “seemed to fall apart under the relentless media attention”.

    I find drag a “drag” why anyone outside the gay community finds some Muppet dressed as an opposite gender amusing escapes me.

    @Permo Dermo: It’s an art form; satire, comedy, costume and drama – You should go to a show, it’s a great laugh and really entertaining! You don’t need to be LGBT to enjoy as what they actually talk and joke about is relevant to everyone!

    @Permo Dermo:
    Do you think that it is only gay people watch Mrs Browns Boys or ever watched the film Mrs Doubtfire? Get with the real world buddy. Dressing as the opposite gender has never been exclusive a gay thing.

    Why are minstrel shows and blackface strongly frowned on but drag is ok?

    @James Joseph Superior Power: firstly, it’s opposed, not apposed. Secondly, no, I’m not taking about wearing the clothes associated with the other sex, I’m talking about the sexualised overblown piss-taking out of an oppressed group by their oppressor, much like white people “blacking up” for minstrel shows. Women are not a costume the same way black people are not costumes.

    @Veronica: all type of people do drag, I have met women who do drag acts along with their colleagues in the shows. Plus acting is not over exaggerating the actions of women or whatever your talking about. Drag is used in different ways for different people to express themselves man/woman, straight, gay, trans, etc
